Glen Campbell has Alzheimer's, plans for final album and farewell tour
LA Times ^ | 6-21-11 | Randy Lewis

Glen Campbell has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the 75-year-old country singer, songwriter and guitarist and his wife, Kim, have told People magazine, a condition that has prompted him to describe a new album coming in August as his final recording.

"Glen is still an awesome guitar player and singer," Kim said in the interview. "But if he flubs a lyric or gets confused onstage, I wouldn’t want people to think, 'What's the matter with him? Is he drunk?' "

Campbell is planning a series of concerts this fall in support of the album, “Ghost on the Canvas,” due Aug. 30. He is working again with producer Julian Raymond, who helped rejuvenate Campbell’s career in 2008 on “Meet Glen Campbell,” a collection of surprising song choices including Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” the Velvet Underground’s “Jesus,” Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ “Walls” and the Replacements' “Sadly Beautiful.”

Shortly after that album was released, Campbell told The Times: "I'd like to see it go up the charts, go platinum and win the Grammy," he said. "Then I'd retire."

He was the most in demand studio musician in the world at that time. He would also often “double dip” and lay down vocal tracks as well, and walk away with TWO checks. They called them the wrecking crew for a reason. They were that good.

Great guitar player. One of the best. The Duke liked him and he once told Frank Sinatra off when Sinatra said, about a young Glen,”who is that faggot” during a recording session. God love him.

I miss Glen's version of the Big O's "Dream Baby". My mom and I would watch The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour every week on CBS. God bless Glen.

Just put on my CD of “Wichita Lineman”.

It was one of the few albums my folks had when I was a kid.

I missed it a few years ago and got the CD.

Still sounds great, good music always stands the test of time.

Beautiful. I wish he’d record a stripped album like it. The upcoming last album is produced by the same fellow who overproduced the last one.

One of my best memories of Glen Campbell, other than his wonderful music, was his appearance on Johnny Carson one night in the 60’s or 70’s.

Cambell sat next to Don Rickles on the couch and it was flat out hilarious. Maybe it’s on YouTube.

Anyone who hasn't yet heard his last CD needs to go find it.

Yup. Good CD.

Galveston

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin’
I still see her dark eyes glowin’
She was 21 when I left Galveston

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea waves crashing
While I watch the cannons flashing
I clean my gun and dream of Galveston

I still see her standing by the water
Standing there lookin’ out to sea
And is she waiting there for me?
On the beach where we used to run

Galveston, oh Galveston, I am so afraid of dying
Before I dry the tears she’s crying
Before I watch your sea birds flying in the sun
At Galveston, at Galveston

Wichita Lineman

I am a lineman for the county.
And I drive the mainroad.
Searching in the sun for another overload.
I hear you singing in the wire.
I can hear you thru the whine.
And the Wichita Lineman,
is still on the line.

I know I need a small vacation.
But it don’t look like rain.
And if it snows that stretch down south,
won’t ever stand the strain.
And I need you more than want you.
And I want you for all time.
And the Wichita Lineman,
is still on the line.

And I need you more than want you.
And I want you for all time.
And the Wichita Lineman,
is still on the line

I thought that Meet Glen Campbell bordered on overproduction at times. It was obvious they were trying to recreate that 70s Rhinestone Cowboy sound.

Still, I kinda like that Billy Sherrill/countrypolitan sound.
