Probe continues into Wild West re-enactment that injured three

Authorities are still trying to determine who is responsible for shooting and injuring three tourists Friday night at a staged shootout in downtown Hill City, the lead investigator said Monday.

Lt. Marty Graves of the Pennington County Sheriff's Office said it still is unclear what went wrong at the event, or even if the re-enactors' guns were involved in the incident that will likely bring an end to a regular tourist event in the town 25 miles southwest of Rapid City.

"At this point in time, we don't know what happened out there in Hill City," Graves said Monday. "We don't know if it's a criminal investigation. What we do know is that those victims were hit with some type of projectile. We haven't been able to determine what type of projectiles those are at this time."

I was talking to my mom earlier today and she told me of this news story. Apparently somebody who participated in this shootout loaded his .44 with real bullets instead of blanks. ooops. My mom is a good source, she founded dakota arms.

Hmmmm.... .44 bullets instead of blanks? Well, that would add a lot of “realism” to the re-enactments now wouldn’t it? It could even become the new hip thing for thrill seekers to do.

LOL

Something a little newer....

“At a news conference Friday afternoon, Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom said investigators have identified the actor who fired live rounds during an Old-West-style cowboy shootout on Hill City’s Main Street last Friday....

Investigators say they were able to determine that the bullets were fired from a .45 handgun fired by Paul Doering, 49, Somerset, one of the actors in the cowboy shootout.”

Wawright! It sounds like somebody went a little bit too far with the “realism” thing.

Appropriate punishments are deserved.

Your Mom is right. It was live ammo......according to a Doctor friend who treated one of the victims.

I see some big lawsuits coming to Hill City.

The more we find out the more we can be grateful no one was killed. The “other group” that does the act in Hill City, does not allow participants to load their own weapons. They have never had “issues” such as this one.

They were very fortunate no one was more seriously injured or killed. Deadwood has never had such an incident......nor the OK Corral in Tombstone. (been to that one, too).

I still can’t understand how such an accident could happen. Someone has some splainin’ to do.

How did you fare the storm on Friday night? We were camping near Spearfish at a gold prospectors event and missed all the excitement.

Someone has some splainin’ to do.

Amen to that.

By the time the Friday storm reached us in the valley, there was just rain, hail, and wind. Minor wear and tear on the shingles, but no softball size hail balls, fortunately.

Can’t imagine camping in a downpour like we had, but happy you missed the excitement.

Small world, I used to work on the satellite system at the house and Dakota Arms. My dad was an AF pilot for 35 yrs, and I served 22 years, as a USAF pilot.

I note that the police were very careful to say that they do *not* know that any of the re-enactors or their guns were involved. If it were the accidental loading of a .44 with real bullets, we likely would know it already.

One of the rumors that I have heard is that they have not been able to find any .44 brass from a real cartridge. Blank cartridge brass is quite different than that used for live .44 rounds.

That is what I get from not reading the whole thread before posting... so the irresponsible party has been found.
