I think he is looking for guidance more so.

Ruin your reputation in record time? I was hoping it was a misunderstanding but you followed up with clear statements. How about a little compassion for someone looking for suggestions. Why don’t you keep your fake hugs, nobody wants them.

I thought I HAD to live in a house. Then a series of things happened. We sold most of our stuff and used the money to buy a very clean and decent RV for $6000.00 We lived outside of Houston about 40 miles in a really nice park for $500.00 a month which included water and electricity. Internet was ten dollars a month. We lived there for a year and actually quite enjoyed it. It let us get back on our feet and it felt like being on vacation. Enjoyable to watch the people come and go. There was a nice little lake and rolling grass and a play yard and a little store and laundry facility. It felt secure because it belonged to us. They even picked up the trash every day if you just toss a bag out by your door.

But it did something else. It changed the way I saw life and possessions and what I need vs. what I want. I began to see that one can look at life in different ways and that I could choose to see it as “living in a large car” or I could choose to see it as “living in a very cool house that could go anywhere.” Such an option allows you to go to wherever the work is. I mention it only because it took us so long to hit on this solution. P.S. at the end of the year we sold it for the same as we paid for it so it was much better than rent down the drain.

Thank you! I need it. But all is not lost, I think I just found the company that won the contract. I’ll have to contact them on Tuesday.

They started looking for people in my area about a week ago with the exact job description for what I was doing. They did not list on the major job boards.

I suspect with a little bit of luck I’ll be able to get the sub contract back since I have 5 years experience and most, if not all, of the other people wanting the contract will have none.

Buddy, if everything you are saying is true (don’t get offended by that) I certainly wouldn’t blame you.

Prayers up for you and yours!

basically the same thing we are doing now. 2 years ago we where turned down for a house. So we used the down payment money to buy a mobile home. All we pay is lot rent, gas and electric. Boils down to about 500 a month. Not as easy to move but just as cheap :) it’s not huge. 1200 square feet or so. But it’s ours, has a bedroom for both kids, 2 baths and a laundry room.

Getting turned down for that 30 year mortgage was the best thing that happened to us in hind sight. Just think about how screwed I’d be if I had a 1200 dollar a month house payment.

There is a difference between a Safety Net and a Hammock.

Don't confuse the actions of others who take advantage of a broken system with your current needs. If you were not a person of Character I'm sure you wouldn't be posting on this Forum.

Life is full of rough patches. Some of us are able to tackle these setbacks on our own and others need a little help. You won't be joining the Takers if you use the resources that are available to help you get back in the saddle.

As Conservatives, many of us have a philosophy that you help people who can't help themselves, not people who won't help themselves. It sounds like you are the former and your relatives are the latter.

I hope you are able to overcome the situation you find yourself in.

Here is the proper order of sources from which to seek help:
  1. family
  2. friends
  3. church
  4. private charity
  5. gov't
Note that gov't is last. Our current system is ass backwards and depraved.

The system was designed for emergencies like this. Hard working, loving families trying to make it and running on hard times. Hard working Americans paying into the system can seemingly only dream that the right people would get the help promised.

Friend, it's ok. Get the help you need. Recover, in time you can rebuild. This is what the help was meant for. Our prayers go out for you and your family.

Go with God and all the best to you.

You had better hope that when the day comes—and it will-that you need help, other people will be more tolerant, compassionate, and accepting than you show yourself to be. Hope that they don’t call you a liar with no evidence, and then stubbornly refuse to apologize or show any contrition when others point out their error.

You realize, of course, that you have made a fool of yourself in front of the 100,000+ Freepers who read this forum every day?

Cableguy, if you're posting here you probably already know the answers and probably want some validation of what you know is right.

Going on welfare is not the answer. Ask yourself — how did the people who are now on generations of welfare get there? Often because somebody’s grandmother or grandfather thought they'd fallen on hard times and needed some temporary help that turned into long-term dependency.

The biblical principle for helping others is that he who will not work, neither shall he eat. Note carefully that doesn't refer to those who “cannot” work, but those who “will not” work.

I am not in the practice of saying much about my own personal life on the internet, but when I was in college and graduate school, working full time to pay my tuition and bills, I was involved with an inner-city church where I saw firsthand the devastation caused by welfare programs. Not just many but most of the people on welfare were living considerably more comfortable lives than me, but they just couldn't understand how ***ANYBODY*** could make ends meet on the “small” amount of money they were getting (and which the taxes on my barely-over-minimum-wage job was paying). What really shocked me was when one father in the church with minimal job skills lost his job due to layoffs, had great difficulty finding another unskilled labor position, and was advised by his social worker to abandon his wife and kids so they'd qualify for food stamps and rent support.

That is unacceptable, and it is what the pre-Ronald Reagan welfare programs were leading to. We see the consequences now in Europe of people thinking it is perfectly normal to pay more than half of their incomes in taxes so other people can live off welfare without working.

As long as you are able to work, do not go on welfare. If there are no jobs in your area, try to move somewhere you can get a job. There may be a day you have no choice, but it absolutely must be your last choice to go on welfare.

By the way, I'm not giving advice I won't take. It's been a long time, but twice in my life, once in college/grad school and once later when the company for which I was working lost a major contract, my income was low enough to qualify for welfare benefits. I've never applied for them, and the only reason I knew that was because I was furious to see people around me who were taking benefits that I could have taken but definitely would not — my taxes went to pay for their refusal to work.

Repeating — don't do it unless you have no other choice, and make sure when you say you have no other choice that you **REALLY** do have no other choice, not merely that you don't see any other choice.

Nine welfare recipients collecting $ 1500 each.

You might want to do some homwork. Conservatives need to be better prepared when presenting an argument.

This guy's surviving family will have X dollars to share. My SIL died of breast cancer last year. In her case, SSI is limited to $1,800 monthly for surving spouse AND children. My brother waived getting any portion because that means their daughters would get less. And since that $1800 is based on her payroll contributions over 20 years, that 25 year old in this story is very unlikely to be eligible for that amount. So your $1500 per surviving family member is probably far from accurate. Just saying, we need to present accurate facts rather than post something far off target that could be relayed on and on. Please remember that you may influence the opinion of others less likely to do their own research.

Do my homework? I have the newspaper article, from the Montgomery Advertiser dated 7 Feb. 2011. The entrepreneur(drug pusher), alias “Flair” died of gunshot wounds on Martin Luther King Blvd. You think $1500. is too high? Now add food stamps, free medical, free school lunches, on and on and on. If it was one family, you would be correct. But there is a great chance that all 9 children are from 9 different mothers, different towns, in 8 surrounding counties. Here you have 9 mothers going to multiple State welfare offices looking for help, and what I’m saying is they are going to get it. They know the system, Oh and “Flair” has 8 brothers and 5 sisters.
