At Least Two Cats Intentionally Burned in Local Suburb

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio— A shocking case of animal cruelty is being investigated in Bay Village.

Two cats have been burned in a manner that seems to indicate it was intentional.

One of the animals is 8-year-old Heidi, a gray and black tiger striped cat.

Cathy Mohney says Heidi is a house cat who slipped out of the house on Lindford Drive last week.

"It was very unusual she wasn't right here on the porch," said Cathy. "She typically goes out just in the yard, if at all. She's normally an indoor cat."

While the Mohney's hung fliers around town and searched the neighborhood, two miles away near the Bay Village Family Aquatic Center on Bryson Lane a young boy and his friends found a cat hiding under a car.

"I told my friends we had to get the cat out from under the car so it doesn't get hurt," said Curtis Szelesta, 12.

After a lot of coaxing, Curtis finally got the cat out from under the vehicle and noticed she was hurt.

"She was squirming and the feet were all bloody and she smelled like ashes and it was disgusting to smell and see," said Curtis.

Curtis called his mother, Jennifer, who quickly rushed the cat to the Detroit Dover Animal Hospital in Westlake.

Because the cat's paws were burned, doctors thought the cat might have stepped or jumped onto a hot surface, but after lifting her tail they noticed severe burns to the tail and rectum.

“Usually, it’s a crime of opportunity. They find a cat or dog not supervised and that’s when these things happen,” said Chief Wright.”

And people think I’m crazy just because, even though the dogs go out in a secure, locked back yard, I’m -always- at the door, watching them, no matter what the weather.

[and there’s a rifle by the back door, too...just in case]

Anybody touches *my* dogs and I’m gonna “reach out and touch” *them*.

Evil bastards.

Poor cat.

We just had 2 similar incidents in the Portland OR area too.

Not burned, much worse.

You bet. I’m in the country and we trap the strays people dump out here. They can die of starvation, collisions with vehicles, animal predators, or the human ones.

It’s the human ones that scare me the most.

We are now on our 6th stray pet just captured and neutered in May and now a sweet little girl who was obviously a housecat at one time.

Animal cruelty and baby butchering should be hangin’ offenses - just saying IMO.

Last week our local police busted 3 teenagers, 15, 16, and 17, who were driving around town for months shooting cats from their car with a .22 rifle. One kid admitted he had shot at least 50 cats by himself, but all of them apparently took turns. In total, they killed over 100 cats in the last few months, and took great pride reading about themselves in the local news.

Sick stuff...

Well, it sounds like somebody knows who did this...and they are too scared to press charges...

I’m not sure which makes me more angry...almost thing the family that is not pressing charges has a violent situation in their own home...

God Bless the kid that found her and his Mom for being willing to get the cat to the vet...

I normally don't ping animal cruelty stories, but in this case the scumbag is still at large. Local FReepers take note.

G-d be with those poor kitties.

Amen.

I’ve hauled lots of injured things to vets, most of which were accepted.

The vets around here won’t help *any* wild critters, though and the nearest rehabber is down near Bowie and they were the most unpleasant ‘animal lovers’ I’ve ever met.

We tended the fawn [broken leg] as best we could for the 3 days it took to locate them and they were mightily ticked we didn’t call sooner.

Some kind of *public telephone book listing* might’ve helped.

Don’t ever bother to call the DNR for injured wildlife.

They’ll just threaten to fine you if you even dare try to help it and then tell you to just go out and shoot it.

Jerks.

I’m amazed you even have any strays.

Judging by my past, I’ve assumed that *every stray/wounded thing on earth* comes here....LOL

My grandmother had the same “luck”.

Of all the innumerable pets she had, she never paid a dime for any of ‘em.

They’d just show up one day, look around and make themselves to home.

Maybe it’s genetic....;D

I have some ideas.

Me too. I'd like to have them be the first to walk on the Moon since 1972, without space suits.

Last month, one of the cats, G.W. (aka "Dubya") I took in as a stray kitten passed away from cancer. He was only 10. I know cancer is a losing battle in our furry friends, but we did fight to keep him alive and in fair condition for 2 months and I don't think he suffered all that much, at last until the last day or three. We did give a good fight and overall I would have to say we done well given the circumstances. It offends me greatly and much more to hear of stories like these since I fight for my pets tooth and nail as much as I can. Well, he is with his brother now, Greystone, who passed away when he was 5, due to kidney failure. We still have his mother (Spunky) and sister (Whitey) plus one male cat, Rascal.
