Should parents lose custody of super-obese kids?.

Should parents of extremely obese children lose custody for not controlling their kids' weight? A provocative commentary in one of the nation's most distinguished medical journals argues yes, and its authors are joining a quiet chorus of advocates who say the government should be allowed to intervene in extreme cases. It has happened a few times in the U.S., and the opinion piece in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association says putting children temporarily in foster care is in some cases more ethical than obesity surgery.

You got that right. And all the while most of the kids who qualify for school lunch/brunch/dinner/ad nauseaum, also get food stamps. Remember that one in 6 (soon to be one in 5!) people are on food stamps. That means if you are not, soon if you see 4 people, one of them on average will be. Yikes!

Lose custody to whom? To state run fat farms? To well-paid “volunteer” foster families? Over the long run, Darwin will take care of the problem. Let nature take its course.

Completely agree. Raising children is the most difficult, yet rewarding, job I've ever had. My husband lifts everyday in his basement weightroom. My son has been witnessing this since we brought him home from the hospital. Our daughter, due to arrive Sept. 4, will witness the same thing. We exercise together and we cook from scratch most of our meals. It would be so easy to buy prepared food or order pizza, but what would I be teaching my children? If these parents want to screw up their kids that's their business. What pisses me off is that eventually my son and daughter will be paying for their knee replacements, stomach staplings, diabetes meds, and heart caths.

Any child scoring less than 70% on any school test should be taken away from their parents, or their parents should be shot, whichever is cheapest.

And they give them a backpack of food for the weekend, lest they starve in 48 hrs!
For kids getting all their meals provided at school by the taxpayers, their food stamps should be revoked! WTF would they need them for? Oh, junk food and pre-made pizzas at our expense. That is double dipping, without a doubt, not that anybody would ever have the balls to bring up the subject.

I don’t think I would make it through the public education system again, if I had to. I pretty well left HS and started at a very early age, and it was barely bearable even then. Two of my best friends went to school to become teachers, one is now a teacher at a charter school, and the other works for the university. I’m sure the stories you could tell would make us cringe.

I don’t think all school teachers are bad, but I think there’s by far enough to scrap the system in favor of a better one. I’m sure you know the challenges too, and I applaud you for being able to bear the presence of unending liberal whackiness (I spelled it that way on purpose, lol). People say that kids lose socialization when homeschooled, I disagree. There’s still church groups, homeschooling coalitions, etc. etc. I wish you all the best.

I think it is manufactured foods - must do something to mess with our satiated feelings. The animal kingdom doesn’t gorge itself, why do we?

Well, let’s see . . . what if the parent is obese and the children are not. Would that mean Mooch-elle would have her kids taken away????? Huh???? I mean, c’mon . . . fair is fair! Have the Calorie-Nazis go into our White House and remove her children and then make Mooch-elle get on a treadmill.

“The animal kingdom doesn’t gorge itself, why do we?”

High fructose corn syrup, mostly. That, and the invention of bacon! (Only the bacon part was kidding...)

Thus a little socialism compels even more socialism.

With socialized medicine, suddenly there is a “compelling government interest” in regulating every aspect of a person's life.

Fat people live a fat lifestyle and teach a fat sedentary culture to their fat children. That is their choice and their freedom - but no free man should be compelled to pay for the medical care of anyone else.

If you thought fat people were held in contempt BEFORE - just wait until we are all compelled to pay for their medical care and special gurneys and ambulances and entrances and special MRI scanners, etc, etc.

Have you seen most peoples dogs?

How about pigs?

Almost any animal will grow obese if given unlimited high quality food and no reason/opportunity to exercise.

"... Should parents of extremely obese children lose custody for not controlling their kids' weight? A provocative commentary in one of the nation's most distinguished medical journals argues yes."

Okay, and do exactly WHAT with a bunch of fat mopey kids?

They're going to be foster children of a bunch of distinguished medical doctors? No?

Then we're going to have government-run "fat camps" out in the wilderness where obese kids can fell timber and mine ore to lose all that weight, in Gulag Obamapelago? No? That's not what the distinguished medical journal meant, either?

The Journal of the American Medical Association is lending expert advice to the brilliant success that is Foster Parenting? Introduce millions of America's tubby teenagers into that hideous monstrosity after ripping them from their families?

I think these distinguished doctors are prescribing themselves crazy pills. I'm also sick to death of their brilliant and distinguished role in helping to socially engineer the United States of America.

If the revolution ever comes, I propose that the headquarters of the Journal of the American Medical Association is the first place to be burnt to the ground.

Why the he** would your tax dollars go to some one’s medical needs? That is one of the stupidest questions ever asked on FR and unfortunately it is asked all too often. As if a few bucks in tax is more important than freedom. Once we repeal Bozo care you won’t have to worry about your tax dollars and medical care except for illegals. Maybe you should be more concerned with illegals than with how other people raise their children.

You haven't met my cat. She finishes her portion, then goes after the dog food. The other cat eats on a counter because fatty cat is too heavy to jump up there.

This will be justified as a program to deal with one or two cases where the kid is 400+ pounds, but in a few years, it will morph into a program that twists your arm if your kid is 2% over the line on some bureaucrat’s “Ideal Weight” chart.

I wonder as a fat 12 yer old child who may have a genetic propensity toward obiesity in conjunction a “bad” diet, if, as they walk through the living room and FOX news is on and they hear that the government may take him away from his parents,......does that terrorize him. He loves his parents...they love him....and he realizes or interprets that the government will rip him from his parents....is that a form of terrorism?

First it was “school lunch”. Then it was “school breakfast” because the kids can’t think on an empty stomach.

Good point. I wonder how this "epidemic" tracks with the explosion in school lunch/breakfasts. Because they feed the kids hi-carb garbage.
