Check Pepper Spray or Buy New?
7/21/2011 | Oshkalaboomboom

We are taking a trip to Vegas. I'm a bit concerned about the crime rate there so I'd like to bring my Kimber Pepper Blaster with me. It's not a gun but it's better than nothing. I've read that it's legal to check pepper spray in your luggage but I was wondering if it would be less of a hassle to just buy another one when I get to Vegas. Opinions?

I'd buy as well. It may be legal to check it. But with suitcases required to be unlocked, there is a fair to middling chance of TSA pilferage.

If eBay has it for sale, pilferage is a potential problem. It is what you get when you hire mainly third world people to work in a mainly first world environment.

I’d buy...just think if it was checked and then leaked in your stuff?

I would buy at your designation. That’s just how I roll... I would be a bit fearful of the airlines going nuts over an aerosol and delaying me. Good luck on your trip and have some fun!

Do you intend to season someone or defend your life? Just asking.

If you have a CCW, and your state has reciprocity w/ NV, take it. It is easy, one stop at the airline counter each way....

If not, why go somewhere you cannot protect yourself?

Never leave home w/o it.

Google a good store in LV and buy when you get there.

Be careful with pepper spray in Nevada.

NRS 202.370 Definitions. As used in NRS 202.370 to 202.440, inclusive:

1. “Shell,” “cartridge” or “bomb” includes all shells, cartridges or bombs capable of being discharged or exploded, when such discharge or explosions will cause or permit the release or emission of tear gas.

2. “Tear gas” includes all liquid, gaseous or solid substances intended to produce temporary physical discomfort or permanent injury through being vaporized or otherwise dispersed in the air. The term does not include a liquid, gaseous or solid substance whose active ingredient is composed of natural substances or products derived from natural substances which cause no permanent injury through being vaporized or otherwise dispersed in the air.

3. “Weapon designed for the use of such shell, cartridge or bomb” includes all revolvers, pistols, fountain pen guns, billies, riot guns or other form of device, portable or fixed, intended for the projection or release of tear gas except those regularly manufactured and sold for use with firearm ammunition.

[2:273:1955]—(NRS A 1977, 887; 1981, 2051)

NRS 202.375 Applicability of NRS 202.370 to 202.440, inclusive, to small weapons containing “CS” tear gas and to certain law enforcement, correctional and military personnel.

1. The provisions of NRS 202.370 to 202.440, inclusive, do not apply to the sale or purchase by any adult, or the possession or use by any person, including a minor but not including a convicted person as defined in NRS 179C.010, of any form of:

(a) Cartridge which contains not more than 2 fluid ounces in volume of “CS” tear gas that may be propelled by air or another gas, but not an explosive, in the form of an aerosol spray; or

(b) Weapon designed for the use of such a cartridge which does not exceed that size,

Ê and which is designed and intended for use as an instrument of self-defense.

2. A seller, before delivering to a purchaser a cartridge or weapon which may be sold pursuant to subsection 1, must record and maintain for not less than 2 years the name and address of the purchaser and the brand name, model number or type, and serial number if there is one, of the weapon or cartridge, or both.

3. The provisions of NRS 202.370 to 202.440, inclusive, do not prohibit police departments or regular salaried peace officers thereof, sheriffs and their regular salaried deputies, the Director, deputy director and superintendents of, and guards employed by, the Department of Corrections, personnel of the Nevada Highway Patrol or the military or naval forces of this state or of the United States from purchasing, possessing or transporting any shells, cartridges, bombs or weapons for official use in the discharge of their duties.

4. As used in this section, “CS” tear gas means a crystalline powder containing ortho-chlorobenzalmalononitrile.

(Added to NRS by 1981, 2050; A 2001 Special Session, 232)

Even though it is not technically illegal Vegas PD are prone to try and make an issue out of it.
As to your question buy new and give it to someone when you leave. I do not travel with ANY liquids on airplanes any more. Just gives the gropers another reason to run you through the wringer.

If you stay in one of the big houses security is not an issue. If you wander into strip club land take a cab or limo directly there and back. You will have no problems.

I lived in Vegas 20 years, the strip it’s self is very safe, especially considering 36 million visitors.

Why go someplace you feel that unsafe?

TSA.gov is a good reference for checked or carry on items. Just do a search for “checked items.”

Buy wasp spray at destination. It has the same effects on people as pepper spray but you can use it on attackers further away. Probably less expensive than pepper spray, too.

TSA has pulled my spray from my luggage when I’ve informed them of it at check in.

Order spray legal for NV, have it delivered to yourself c/o yourself at your hotel.

Buy wasp spray at destination.

Does it come in a can small enough to concealed carry comfortably? All I've seen have been way too big.

Are you suggesting that people shouldn't travel? Even the Vatican has criminals hanging around who know that unarmed tourists, probably with cash, will be relatively safe targets.

You might consider an inexpensive stun gun, which are legal in NV.

If you have a destination in NV, you can buy a stun gun on ebay for under $10, free shipping, and have it sent to you in NV. Things pack quite a wallop, and are cheap enough to be disposable with a shrug.

A friend always carried a “lucky” 1” ball bearing, engraved with a clover leaf and the word “lucky”. He observed that even a grandmother could fracture someone’s skull with one.

I never go where I feel unsafe but that would only mean I avoid certain areas, ghetto areas. Hence, I travel rather freely but even in Chicago I do not really worry about any place. Most people are overly fear-ridden because of the instant propagation of criminal actions throughout the nation when they occur.

Criminal activity has been on the decline for decades but too many believe you take your life into your own hands when you go to the big city. You could be a victim anywhere but it is not very likely unless you are black. Decent Black people are much more endangered by criminals than others primarily because the liberals prevent them from arming themselves and dealing with the scum which preys upon them.
