Boehner Tells GOP He Will Unveil New Debt Strategy [Short-Term Debt Extension]

Boehner Tells GOP He Will Unveil New Debt Strategy

By Lori Montgomery, Paul Kane and Renae Merle

July 23 House Speaker John A. Boehner told his troops Saturday that he hopes to roll out a two-step strategy within the next 24 hours for raising the federal debt ceiling to avoid roiling Asian financial markets when they open Sunday, according to several participants in the conference call.

In the call with his House GOP colleagues, Boehner (Ohio) said he still hopes to slice as much as $4 trillion out of the federal budget over the next decade, despite the collapse of talks with President Obama on Friday over a bipartisan “grand bargain” to restrain the nation’s debt.

Top Republican aides said Boehner envisions a short-term extension of the debt limit that would include spending cuts that meet or exceed the debt limit increase. That would be paired with a strategy for finding additional savings. Options include a new super committee of the sort proposed by Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.). Another option would be to tell existing legislative committees to make policy changes over the next few months aimed at meeting the savings targets.

In the call, Boehner stressed that the path forward would be a new plan, not a proposal offered earlier this month by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to authorize Obama to raise the debt limit on his own, without explicit congressional approval.

Freshman Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Tex.) confirmed that Boehner was open to a short-term deal that would allow more time to solve the problem, but added that Republican leaders remain worried that even a temporary lift of the government’s borrowing authority would fail on the House floor.

"If this guy was negotiating for me,I would jump off a bridge."

You had better jump because he is negotiating for you, taxpayer.

That’s the proverbial example of taking a bucket of water out of the deep end of the pool and dumping it in the shallow end.

We pay off our creditors with 100% borrowed money. Isn't that what is called a Ponzi Scheme? Our form of government is becoming corruption. I see Crybaby Boehner as much the enemy as Obama. Both are corrupt narcissists out only for their own self aggrandizement.

Spit!

I emailed Speaker Boehner and said go short.

‘The ONLY bottom line that I have is that we have to extend this debt ceiling through the next election, into 2013,” Barack Hussein Obama, July 22, 2011

Because Obama doesn’t want people talking about his frivolous spending again between now and election time.

It is not the job of the House to make it ‘convenient’ for Obama. Obama and the Democrats sure didn’t make it ‘convenient’ for the former President, (or our troops)

I say only go 3 months at a time!!! Make this country talk about Obama and the Democrats’ out of control spending often and up to the election when Obama and the radical Democrats are ousted.

Anybody on this site who believes a 10 year deal to cut spending is plain stupid. How many times have we seen that snake-oil deal... promised cuts that are never delivered.

One would think that Obama and the Dems are in the driver’s seat. They have no plan and the Reps just keep coming up with one after another becoming more frantic as the August 2 date approaches. Obama and Reid say no deal on any short term increase. So why are the Reps offering one?

Didn't Obama say he would veto any short-term deal?

So, which one is going to be the liar?

He did say that but Obama caved on that stance a few days ago. Now he says he will do a short-term deal.

Boner needs to take the original CC&B bill and modify it. Double the cuts, Cut the cap by 5%, and then pass it. Send it to the Senate and Howdy Dowdy with a “Take it or Leave it message and then send the house home until they pass it. ....red

And have articles of impeachment prepared in case he defaults the debt or holds back from the military . . .

What is the Asian Market fear that is being spoken of? Even I can see what a sham that is!! What we see is a mechanism in place that controls debt - and that's a bad thing??

“...Boehner (Ohio) said he still hopes to slice as much as $4 trillion out of the federal budget over the next decade.”

In days of yore there was a company named Pfaltzgraff in York, PA that manufactured crocks. The largest one I ever saw in my 41 years as an auctioneer was 30 gallon size.

Any agreement to cut spending over more than ONE year, not to mention a DECADE, is such a huge crock that it makes a 55 gallon drum look like a thimble! JOHN BONER AND EVERY ONE OF THE REPUBLICANS who would sign on to such a humongous hoax KNOW it, too! They just think that WE are stupid enough to believe that it actually means something and will actually result in decreased spending and lower deficits; WHICH IT WILL NOT! I’m beginning to fantasize about tar and feathers!

I just now emailed the following message to Mr. Boner’s contact address provided by you. Thank you, newzjunkey.

Mr. Speaker:
I understand that you announced that you are working to achieve an agreement with the Democrats that would purportedly cut 4 trillion from the debt over a decade.

I am writing this to inform/remind you that we the voters are hip to the truth that agreements pretending to do something over a span of years are nothing but a hoax! They NEVER get carried out! The SPENDING goes forth full-blast, but the cutting NEVER happens!

So if you just cannot restrain yourself from capitulating to the TAX AND SPEND - DRUNKEN SAILOR crowd; and if you simply MUST cave in and join Harry Reid and his lying crowd in perpetrating still ANOTHER FRAUDULENT BETRAYAL against the people who work and pay taxes; go ahead and sell us out AGAIN! But BE FOREWARNED that we are wise to you and your pantywaist colleagues, and we will do everything in our power the next time any of you are up for reelection, to see that every one of you get put out to pasture, with your well-publicized record following you!
