OK- Making an economic Armageddon retreat - what do I need?
Today | Me

Posted on 08/11/2011 7:49:26 PM PDT by dila813

Ok, I am out shopping for the perfect retreat to get away from the city and if required live out there without any resupply required.

What I have so far identified: 1. Plentiful Nearby Food Supplies 2. Lots of Land 3. Shelters - anything specific about the shelter other than insulation, wood heat, and wind power with back up generators? 4. Guns? 5. Ammo? 6. Tools? 7. Sanitation?

Did you ever read *One Second After*?

You might find it very useful in answering many of your questions and concerns.

Would be prudent to make sure your tetanus shot is current.

That is is the fortress. Don’t know why I thought it was in VA.

Here’s another article on it.

I believe any retreat should either be hidden well enough from Google satellites and or made nearly impossible to get to.

One must not forget the ones that have nothing have nothing to lose to take yours away.

Unless you want to be like the Omega Man and you desire to be a one man army shooting everyone in sight a true refuge must have a high degree of security.

Borrowed from somewhere else:

I was on another board and somebody casually mentioned keeping some of the paper packets of salt and sugar (the kind found in fast food places) handy in a first aid kit to use as oral rehydration solution.

I thought about it and wondered if the proportions could work out right.....turns out they can!

A single-serving bag of sugar (as seen in coffee shops) has 3.54 grams of sugar. http://www.amazon.com/DOMINO-SUGAR-P...1366174&sr=8-1. While sucrose is a combination of glucose and fructose, we can approximate it as being glucose, which is good enough for our purposes here.

A salt packet has 0.75 grams. http://www.amazon.com/Salt-Packets-G...1366248&sr=1-2

The ratio of salt to sugar in ORS is 2.6:13.5 / liter of water http://rehydrate.org/ors/low-osmolarity-ors.htm

So, 4 packets of salt (3 grams); 4 packets of sugar (14.16 grams) in a liter of water is surprisingly close to the ideal ratio. Make it 2 and 2 in a half-liter, and sip it down.

The actual formula calls for potassium chloride and trisodium citrate but those are kind of optional. If one happened to have (say) some salt substitute (potassium chloride) a dash (about equal to half a salt packet) would be good. The trisodium citrate is used for flavoring (lemon-lime/citrus, my wife said grimacing).

A pretty good idea! One could even pre-pack the packets in a small ziplock bag for convenience, or in a quart ziplock bag and have a more or less accurate measuring device...

Or, you can use 1 level teaspoon of salt, 6 of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of salt substitute...whichever works.

This is used for preventing dehydration, which is the major cause of death in cases of severe diarrhea...cholera, dysentery, etc. Easy to prevent (wash your hands, boil your water, dig good latrines), fairly easy to treat (lots of fluids, no antibiotics or antidiarrheal drugs because you want to flush the bad stuff out).

There is a town that is on the other side of the mountain about 12 miles away, but if society falls apart there isn’t going to be a dentist there.
That's the problem with assuming that you'll be surviving on your own. You can't, at least not long term.

Even if the dentists (and doctors, and machinists and...) close up their businesses, they will still be around, and will be happy to trade their expertise with those who have something worthwhile to trade.

The problem is connecting with those people. You should do it now, before TSHTF. It seems to me that the best preparation for the end of the world is to become part of a small community that will survive as a community.

I am very interested in your research. My daughter is an active malitia activist and survivalist. Much of her training involves providing basic services to local communities. A critical component is the protection and safety of the community. Please reply by mail if that is more appropriate.

Isn’t R. Heinlein a science fiction writer? I looked at the table of contents, don’t see the relevance?
Heinlein was indeed a science fiction writer, and in his book Time Enough For Love, he has a chapter about the protagonist going off and homesteading on a newly-discovered planet (Tale of an Adopted Daughter, I think the chapter was called). He spends a few pages describing what he decides to bring along on the trek (in a pair of mule-drawn wagons).

There are a few pages that are relevant to the topic of survivalism, but I wouldn't rely on it as a tutorial. If you like science fiction, it's a good read, but if not, you won't be missing anything important.

Find a small community of Christians who believe in the Constitution and are heavily armed. That community should abut a larger community of Christians who are heavily armed.

This situation brings community and protection together from like-minded individuals. Should a threat emerge, this kind of community can organize and bring lots of firepower to confront the enemy.

People living out in the bush alone or with a family will be the first ones killed if the SHTF. It’s impossible to secure a large perimeter by yourself. For that you need a community.

Yup. That’s great info. No sense in dying from something easily treatable.

No body wants to admit to themselves what is happening, they don’t want to talk about it till it is too late.

If the Dentist is around I can try to get him and recruit him into my camp early on....otherwise the guy isn’t going to stay there because the initial thinking of people who don’t know how to live in the country will be to flee to the city. Wrong headed as I know it would be from the descriptions and stories of my grand parents during the Great Depression.

That is what I was thinking, but I don’t know how deep it has to be etc.... do I need to line it with rocks, cover it with rocks...etc to prevent bears and other animals from digging it up and ruining it.

Well, to experience that, you could move to Haiti and see how they cope. There is plenty of room there now since many have moved to the US illegally.

“I *TOTALLY* agree. For me a town with a population of 5,000 - 10,000 is ideal. “

Dittos! Medical, dental, mechanical, etc. We formed communities for a reason and just because the major cities implode doesn’t mean the rest of society will. I have no doubt society is near collapse but good communities will hold together just fine. Anything near a major metro area is doomed. We live 35 miles from two major metro areas but that is far enough to be away from it all, yet, be close enough right now.
