OK- Making an economic Armageddon retreat - what do I need?
Today | Me

Posted on 08/11/2011 7:49:26 PM PDT by dila813

Ok, I am out shopping for the perfect retreat to get away from the city and if required live out there without any resupply required.

What I have so far identified: 1. Plentiful Nearby Food Supplies 2. Lots of Land 3. Shelters - anything specific about the shelter other than insulation, wood heat, and wind power with back up generators? 4. Guns? 5. Ammo? 6. Tools? 7. Sanitation?

Gonna be a lot of people out there jonesin for a smoke after prepackaged junk is all used up.

Tobacco also can be used as an insecticide and a de-wormer for livestock.

There are some wild fruits that are too sour or seedy to eat fresh, that would ferment and could be distilled to make vodka. Actually, just about anything with edible sugars or starches can be used to make vodka, in theory.

There are wild rose buds plentiful along with blue berries.

I imagine that something could be done with them.

Is the terrain rolling enough the no one would notice a new “bump”? If so, could you build above ground with an earthen roof, and blend it with the surroundings, maybe?

As far as I know Black Walnut is tooth specific and I don’t know of anything else that is. One can buy tincture pre-made from several herbwife type people in the short run. Walnut trees will grow in a lot of places if you wanted to plant for the future.

They won’t grow in this place, it has too much moisture, the seeds drown.

Well, I was putting the shelter so far out in the wild no one will ever hear the generator running. It is very unlikely they will even see the smoke from my fire.

Well, at least until TSHTF and everyone runs from the citys to the wild.

Yes, but as we were discussing, it is so far out, that by the time they come out that far on horseback or foot, it will a good 20 day journey to get there.

Doubt that people will be coming in cars, the supply chains are going to be down for good at that point.

I don’t know if you appreciate how vast the west really is.

I don’t know Missouri, but I know my neck of the woods pretty good.

You could disperse everyone to every corner of the state and those people would only see another person once or twice a year.

I know how vast the west is. I travel from Washington State to Ohio and North Dakota to Louisiana. I also know how many people there are in the cities.

You say you're setting this up for the extended period. Unless you plan on secreting an enormous amount of gasoline or diesel your generators are going to run out of fuel. At that point those generators are nothing but scrap to be melted and used for something else. Got blacksmithing experience?
At some point people will be looking. 20 days you say? That means the ones that eventually will make it out to your neck of the woods will be the really nasty ones that survived or a group that is cooperating. More than likely with someone that knows what they're doing.

20 days in your extended time period is a drop in the bucket.

Not trying to downgrade your experience or planning. Just trying to play Devil's advocate.

What is the alternative?

You aren’t offering me anything. Better than being within 10 days of the city and I have somewhere I can go to from that point.

It is fine to advocate something else, just don’t know what it is.

No, for the most part I am using windmills and not fuel based generators.

Just wanted to say that the gasoline/diesel storage for generators can be overcome by acquiring a propane generator and suitable size tank. Propane stores virtually indefinitely and it’s easier on the generator.

I am planning on a retractable 5k watt windmill generator.

I am on the side of a mountain and the wind blows almost constantly.

I figured that it is going to be cheaper since I am looking for long duration capability and then can afford to have another backup generator stashed at another location.,

I offered points that I thought were pertinent to shelter,

I agree that the farther away from a city the better, but if TSHTF you will eventually still get people trying to take what you have. At that point the lines of fire come into play along with the distance from a paved road. I believe I saw that it was, basically, 50 miles along a dirt path? But only 12 miles overland from a small town?

Wind power is a good thought but you might also check out geothermal. Nothing above ground to indicate someone is around.

Devil's advocate doesn't usually offer alternatives, they point out flaws.

55 mins in the best of weather to drive from the paved road to the property. 1h 35 mins if anyone else is on the road due to dust slowing you down.

You kick up a dust trail when you have the good weather that can be seen for 40 miles.

The town is 5 houses and businesses, not much of a town, but that is across the river which isn’t fordable, you have to have a boat.

There is a good chance that people may try to steal your stuff prior to a SHTF scenario if you don’t have it well hidden. But after, if the roads and bridges are destroyed, they will need a helicopter to get things in or out.

The most likely scenario is someone trying to move into the area rather than loot. Not much point in it.

The word “advocate”

It means to promote :http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/advocate

So an example Devil’s advocate position would be for me to live in New York City on Wall Street during economic economic Armageddon to get in on the ground floor.

Devils advocate doesn’t point out flaws unless it is to advance an alternative.

So what is the alternative.

Devil's advocate does not offer alternatives for YOU.

Devil's advocate points out flaws and lets you find an alternative.

Why would the Devil help you?

But that behind, I'm trying to offer insights and alternatives on certain points, such as shelter.

I'm not trying to give you an alternative for the whole. I think you already have a good plan.
All I'm trying to do is tweak some points to make them better, or point out some weaknesses I see. I may, or may not have an alternative off the top of my head.

I still think you should check out geothermal both for power and/or heating.

I don’t think you understand how to be the Devil’s Advocate, you are supposed to offer the exact opposite then endorse it.

Not really helpful in this case at all but was curious since you were being pretty critical without offering anything to improve the situation.

geothermal ? I don’t know how I would use this ... let me look.

Everyone there uses wood heat, there are thousands of acres of 180ft trees with a 1’6” diameter. Everyone just builds their house out of the wood already sitting there, they just bring in a saw mill to make the wood.

It's entirely possible that I am under a misunderstanding of Devil's advocate.
I was always under the impression that a Devil's advocate was to find flaws in a theory in order to dispute it, in order to let the other side strengthen their arguments, while they didn't really disagree with the theory.

I didn't mean to be critical except to get you to explore alternatives. I apologize if it came off another way.

I think that the long term bolt hole is an excellent idea and have one of my own, just not quite as far back in the deep piney woods.
Mine is in a cave in the Ozarks.
