TMZ is reporting that rocker Jani Lane, former singer of the band Warrant, was found dead this evening at a hotel in Los Angeles. He was 47.
The singers body was reportedly discovered at the Comfort Inn hotel in Woodland Hills, CA. So far, no official cause of death has been released or any further details about Lanes recent activities.
Lane was born John Kennedy Oswald in Akron, Ohio on February 1, 1964. The blond long-haired singer began fronting the hair metal band Warrant in 1986 and wrote some of their biggest hits, like 1990′s Cherry Pie, as well as Heaven and Down Boys. The band enjoyed great success with their first two albums, but eventually their popularity waned and in 1993, Lane left Warrant to pursue a solo career.
In 1991, he married model actress Bobbie Brown, who had appeared in the famous Cherry Pie video. The couple had one child together, a daughter, before divorcing in 1993.
In 2005, Lane was a member of VH1′s Celebrity Fit Club 2 reality television series where he competed against other celebrities in a weight-loss competition.
In 2010, he filled in on tour on vocals for Jack Russell for hair metal compatriots Great White.
Lane was known to have a history of substance abuse and was arrested for DUI in May of 2010 his second DUI in a year and was ordered to serve 120 days in jail.
While his history of alcohol abuse was well known and while on Celebrity Fit Club 2, it was obvious he had his problems, its hard to believe his life would come to an end like this. He was a talented singer, songwriter, and performer who seemed, like many fellow musicians, to have lost his way by first letting fame and fortune overcome him, and later let the lost of those things, along with substance abuse, destroy him.
Warrant SUCKED.
It was the second hand smoke and weak coffee that did him in.
The Bee Gees, Brick, Heatwave, The Commodores and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack will be remembered and and played long after Katy Perry and her ilk are forgotten. Anyone heard Gwen Stefani lately aside from lipstick commercials?
Donut gets you a dollar it was a cocaine-related heart attack.
A great picture, and a beautiful couple. Very sad. RIP.
In 1991, he married model actress Bobbie Brown, who had appeared in the famous Cherry Pie video. The couple had one child together, a daughter, before divorcing in 1993.
People hated disco for the same reason they hate hip hop: it wasn’t “authentic” because it was created for DJs and not for sweaty arena performances, and because it tore up the charts and relegated most of the rock bands of the time to commercial irrelevance.
That’s her. She was smoking hot in that video.
Sad news. I saw him once in a store in Akron. A hometown boy, but his lifestyle caught up with him.
I enjoy Warrant.
He married her.............
I heard a story this morning that Jani hated that song, and that it wasn’t even going to be on the album, until the record company told Warrant they didn’t hear a single, so he quickly wrote the song, and the band forever became linked to it.
Can’t say I blame him for feeling that way.
Excellent tune. Warrant is very underrated IMHO.
Good point...I never made that connection when I’d heard his real name before. He was born 3 months after Kennedy’s death. Almost like his parents had a sick sense of humor or something.
I believe he’d long since blown the money he made during their heyday.
I don’t get the hate of the hair bands. Some were pretty bad, but most of them at least were good instrumentalists and had a stage presence. Warrant was pretty good, but the “late” hair bands were generally less talented than the “early” ones like Motley Crue, Ratt, and Dokken.
Did you hear?
For the ping list.
