Netflix has added the 1955 Sherlock Holmes series, with Christopher Lee, to their 'Watch Instantly' library. All 38 episodes .

I’ve really become a fan of the Jeremy Brett version. I think I heard about it here on FR? He’s quite fruity, but I like it. Guilty pleasure, I guess. I haven’t watched any other versions of Sherlock—was always more of a Columbo/Kojak kinda guy. My wife doesn’t like Sherlock, but I’ve been watching a lot of it on netflix.
I have a book about Sherlock Holmes and I noticed the forward was written by Christopher Lee. He was a great Sherlock Holmes tho I still like Basil Rathbone who was great despite some pretty cheap productions.
The Jeremy Brett series is probably the best ever done.

Also recently added to NetFlix is the BBC/Masterpiece Theater production of an updated to current times version of Holmes and Watson, with Watson as a wounded Afghanistan vet. Holmes uses nicotine patches to aid his thinking: “It’s impossible to maintain a proper smoking habit in London these days.” My wife and I watched the three episodes on NF last week. There will eventually be a total of six episodes available and imdb.com says another season is coming.
I’ve read all the Sherlock Holmes books and short stories. Some I can almost recite verbatim.
The Jeremy Brett series is most faithful to the literature, and in many cases uses the same dialogue. I have a good many of them on VHS tape from when A&E ran the series twenty years ago.

Uhhhm, My typing goy a little ahead of my roof reading. While Lee introduces this series, it was Ron Howard who played Sherlock Holmes. for many years I used to watch this series, before going to sleep. I was sad when my local PBS channel stopped airing it. Watching it now, is like slopping into a long lost pair of comfortable slippers.
Yes, PBS aired ot a few months back. There are at least 3 more “updated” episodes already filmed, but not yet shown in the US as far as T know...Been keeping an eye out for them.
I will have to watch them quick because I am cancelling before I get a price increase of 60% on Sept 1st.
I like Watson in the Rathbone movies as well.

Nigel Bruce is who I see in my mind whenever I think of Watson. He also resembles Conan-Doyle a bit. My Daughter gave me a set of old Sherlock Holmes dvd’s. It also included a short video of Conan-Doyle. He actually reminded me a good bit of the character Watson except of course he was not at all bumbling.
For me, it was a fait accompli. I had already switched to only ‘Instant’ a couple of months before they started the whole separate pricing schedule. And I can’t complain. They have steadily increasing the number of shows available so, I’m still good with it.
I really enjoy Brett’s Sherlock ( but like I say, it’s the only one I’ve seen.) I like the chemistry between him and Dr. Watson, also very well played. And I like the time period, the sets, etc. Just some light fun.

Jeremy Brett was a homosexual man. Not that it makes a difference though. He was an excellent Sherlock Holmes. Unfortunately he is no more. Hopefully they will find a new Sherlock Holmes equal to Brett’s character.
