Father Accused Of Pushing, Threatening School Official

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A father is facing a felony charge after things got out of hand at his daughter's elementary school.

Shawn Truitt is charged with shoving a school official and threatening to punch her in the face.

But Friday, Truitt told a different story about what he said really happened when he was arrested after trying to pick up his daughter at Field Elementary School.

He said he is a good person and wants to set the record straight.

Truitt was just back from jail, still stunned by his arrest in front of his own daughter, when he agreed to talk to WLKY's Duane Pohlman and he said it wasn't him, but the school official, who went too far.

"I felt very intimidated. The lady got really, really close to me, up in my face. I thought that was uncalled for," Truitt said.

Truitt claimed a school administrator is responsible for things getting out of hand.

Truitt, who shares custody, said he takes his daughter to and from Field Elementary School a lot, and he said most everyone there knows him.

"I know a lot of the family and faculty at Field Elementary, and I've never really had a problem with them before," Truitt said.

That all changed Thursday. When he tried to pick his daughter, he said things erupted.

Truitt said the school did not send him the tags or ID he needed to pick up his daughter, and when he tried to get them, he said the administrator, whom he did not know, would not let him in.

"I think she took her job a little bit too far," Truitt said.

I believe the father. We’ve been up against this type of principal more than once. They enjoy bullying little kids and think they can bully adults.

I am sorry to any good teachers out there because I know some do exist but the vast majority of those employed in by our public schools are the bottom of the barrel. Sheer idiots.

Homeschool, Dad. Get your children away from that liberal indoctrination center.

Not enough info given in the story to determine who is in the wrong here.

Schools (public and private) cannot release children to someone without the proper ID.

With what little information given, it sounds like there were possibly new school personnel who were unfamiliar with the father - therefore they wouldn’t release the daughter to him. I’m sure it was aggravating to him, but you have to understand the position the school is in if they improperly release a student to someone they didn’t know without the proper identification.

It’s certainly possible the school administrator was in the wrong - we just don’t know. The full story will hopefully come out so this doesn’t happen again.

ID and tags? To pick up your own child? Every parent has to have this? All I can say is that I’m so glad my children are grown. I realize it’s a dangerous time, but good Lord there has to be a better way. All my daughter has to do is call the school and tell them Grandma is going to pick them up. She filled out a form that says nobody gets to pick up my children but me or their dad unless I call and notify ahead of time. We were also notified that in the event the parents were in an accident and couldn’t notify ahead of time, that we had to bring a police officer with us to get the children. That of course is a hassle, but it keeps everybody else from being hassled ALL the time.

Get between me and my kids, folks, you’ve got a serious problem on your hands.

Too many parents “kidnapping” their kids away from their ex-spouses, I suppose. Gotta check out everyone to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Too bad we couldn’t see where adultery and divorce lead, or we could’ve avoided this mess. Instead we said, “They’re consenting adults, they can do what they please.” Now we pay the price of our ignorance.

please someone post details about the "administrator." Name, photo, something.

To all the fathers out there: get your kids out of public skewls ASAP. They are run by incompetent socialists on power trips. Your kids will learn nothing.

IDs and tags are not really a bad idea - it helps ensure that someone doesn't come in and get a child they have no business picking up - many of these potential perps are friends of the family and well-known to the child.

The problem is when the administrations refuse to cooperate with a legal custodian - I bet if the situation had his wife trying to pick the child up, under the same conditions, it would have all gone smoothly...

In the end, it comes down to parents assuming that schools have it all under control, from the moment they drop their kids off to the second they pick them up.

Far too many schools have been sued for every little thing, they are playing "defensive" most of the time.

I get why this educator was defensive; if she released the child to an unapproved person, and it turned out to be a child-molester instead of Dad, we'd be calling for her head and mocking her for her lack of intelligence.

I also get why Dad was upset. As another FReeper noted above, nothing better stand between him and his loved ones.

I don't deal with any of this nonsense with my older two. I homeschool.

I am sorry to any good teachers ...
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

There are **NO** “good” government teachers. None!

ALL government schools in this nation are godless. All of them teach children to think and reason godlessly. The child must do this if he is to cooperate with the classroom instruction and assignments.

How can any of this be good? How can teacher who cooperated with this be good? How could any teacher with even a glimmer of conscience cooperate in a system that would destroy the faith of children?

How could any person who upheld and supported a system of godless indoctrination be good?

I understand. Even in the hospital to get your baby you have to have a matching wrist band, mothers and fathers both. And of course unless a child needs neo-natal, they just leave your child in the room with you so you can watch over them.

I’m fortunate to live in a community where everybody knows everybody and can tell you what you had for breakfast. A stranger sticks out like a sore thumb, we know all well enough to know if one of us has gone whacky or changed behavior. We look out for each other. I know I have gone to one of the school aids and asked...who was that that picked up Charlie? Just to make sure they’re paying close attention.

How many ID’s are we going to have to start hanging around our necks to go about our business. I wore one around my neck at work and used to decorate it for Chritmas and other holidays. Plus, it’s like having to pull on your drawers every morning...don’t leave home without it.

Another thing I still haven’t gotten used to is having the hassle of picking up my cell phone even going to the rest room. I get a real chuckle out of hearing somebody on the cell phone flushing their dang toilet. Awwwwk....

Teachers are also union thugs! And, thugs are thugs!

I'm just glad that my kids got through the system before it became so hostile. If I had kids in public school today, I'd probably be in jail too.

I can see both sides of this. Hard to determine without information. If you turn the care of your children over to the public school then you have to expect to play by their rules.
