The TV Watch: Sharpton Brings His Pulpit to MSNBC [Surprise: NY Times criticizes MSNBC]
NY Times ^ | August 30, 2011 | ALESSANDRA STANLEY

Peter Kramer/MSNBC

snip... “I’m going to say what I mean and mean what I say.”

And that may be the problem with Mr. Sharpton’s cable news pulpit: what he means to say is in lockstep with every other MSNBC evening program, making the stretch between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. a nonstop lecture on liberal values and what is wrong with the Republican Party.

...but other progressive hosts, particularly Rachel Maddow, have continued to attract viewers — not nearly as many as routinely watch Fox News, but more than for less partisan shows on CNN. MSNBC, which found success by preaching to the converted, has now hired an actual preacher.

snip...

snip...And in the evening at least, MSNBC is less a news provider than a carousel of liberal opinion — potential conflicts of interest are swept aside in the swirl of excitable guests.

Unfortunately, so is conflict. There is almost no real debate on any of these evening shows: a conservative is brought on and put on the spot, then in a different segment two people who agree with the host on a given issue answer the host’s questions, usually, with words like “you’re so right.”

On Monday, Mr. Sharpton followed the patented formula, bringing in two experts who agreed with him that recent efforts in North Carolina and other states to stiffen voter-identity requirements and restrict early voting would mostly affect those minorities and younger voters who turned out in record numbers for Barack Obama in 2008. Mr. Sharpton called it a “poll tax by another name.”

It’s an interesting issue, and not one that other MSNBC talk shows have addressed with the same degree of passion, but it would have been helpful to viewers to also learn how proponents of voting restrictions justify the legislation.

Well, I was certainly surprised at the Times (of all papers) taking another group of lefties to task for non-diversity of opinion. Hey...Ms. Stanley...have you had a look at your paper's Op-Ed pages lately? How about the book review? Perhaps you can do a column on the non-diversity of thought there.

Rachel Maddow, have continued to attract viewers

The only attractive thing about her that I can see is perhaps when I mute the remote and wonder how someone who's kinda' reasonably attractive would rather be a homosexual than a heterosexual.

“I’m going to say what I mean and mean what I say.”

Didn’t Horton (of Dr Seuss fame) originally say that? Now I know what Sharpton’s been reading. It also explains why he has so much trouble reading the telepromter. Poor Al.

Bet Rev. Al would attract more viewers if he used a bull horn instead of a microphone.

Sharpton never graduated from any recognized religious school. He was simply appointed a "reverend" by a so-called "bishop". I believe Sharpton was around 10 years old at the time.

So please permit me to correct the above sentence:

Bet Mr. Al would attract more viewers if he used a bull horn instead of a microphone

I watched him last night.....embarrassingly funny. I think he is a tad bit illiterate.

Some of the long pauses on his show have to be because he cannot read what is on the teleprompter..

He replaces Olbermann in my book.

What the Wrong wants is someone who will inflame the Right, so the Wrong can see our reaction and say “Look how he ticks off the Right! We love him!”

If we give him no energy, he will go away.

Those studio lights are very hot. I hope the Jerry Curl on his head don’t ignite.

He was obviously heavily coached to tone it down...I guess they figured adding black viewers to the white lefties would mean ratings success.

The main thing I did want to point out was that even the NY Times thinks MSNBC is too far to the left. Wow!

Amazing...

I know 2 women who watch MSNBC, and it's like talking to Nancy Pelosi.
