Wink (RV Caramel Chip) 1998-2011

Posted on 09/06/2011 7:40:06 PM PDT by aomagrat

I had to put my dog Wink to sleep tonight. He was 13 years old. He had arthritis for years and he just couldn't walk any more. He was in pain. It broke my heart to see him try to walk. His heart was strong but his body just couldn't keep up. The Vet said this happens to a lot of greyhounds.

He was a retired racing greyhound. He raced under the name of RV Caramel Chip. He won 11 of 105 races. He was retired after an on track injury that resulted in a skull fracture and a injured back leg in 2002. I adopted him 9 years ago. He was the best dog I have ever had. I am really going to miss him. When it is time for his walk, I'll have nothing to do now.

Tonight there is a hole in my heart the size of a greyhound. It it ever heals, someday I'd like to adopt another.

Goodbye boy, I'll see you on the other side.

Wink 1998-2011 RIP

Please accept my sincerest condolences. I had to do the same thing a couple of years ago and it was emotionally painful but the right thing to do. Hopefully, you will consider adopting again at some point.

Thank you for caring enough to adopt a Greyhound! All of my pets have been pound-found or dropped off out here at the farm.

They become such a HUGE part of our lives, don’t they? I’ve always had Labs, and have had to put down two to date, but when my Basset goes, I’m going to be inconsolable...

SO - cry a little, laugh a little, remember that you gave Wink a GREAT life while he was with you...and then go on to love again. :)

A few years we had to put our dog down. She was born of a stray mutt we picked up on the road, and birthed under a concrete slab in some undergrowth at the back of our property. She was buried about 30 feet from the spot she was born.

My sympathies on the loss of your canine companion. He will have a life of peace and contentment as he waits for you to join him, when your time comes.

That is heartbreaking. We had to put down our 11 year old Springer from cancer this summer. I still expect to hear him barking when I come through the door.

13 is a great run for a greyhound. That comes from being surrounded by love and appreciation. I will say a prayer for your family tonight.

I had to put my Roxy to sleep a week ago. She was a Boxer and now I am crying all over again. I am soooo sorry for you loss. I know one day we will be reunited with our dogs. Until then know there are people whose heart goes out to you.

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge...

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

THEN YOU CROSS RAINBOW BRIDGE TOGETHER...

I hope the above helps somewhat. I know it did for me when we had to put our last pup down. Never easy. God BLESS!

I am so sorry, letting go is the worst! Dogs are such wonderful creatures, they really do add to our lives.

Wink looked like a real ham-bone and very happy, too. He’s being silly and smiling in that photo!

God bless and hang in there...

Condolences. We had my dog put down this afternoon, she was two weeks shy of 14. Her mother was our dog, I was there when she was born. Words fail me. I will miss her dearly.

Treat me kindly my beloved friend, for no heart in the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for thought I might lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the worlds sweetest music, ans you must know by the wagging of my tail when the sound of your call falls upon my waiting ears.

Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to the bitter elements.

I ask for no greater pleasure than the privilege of sitting at your feet.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me wholesome food that I may stay well to romp and play and walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in any danger.

And my friend when I am old and no longer enjoy good health, hearing and eyesight, do not take any heroic efforts to keep my life going.

Please see to it that my life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with my last breath that my fate was always safest in your hands.

Thank you,
Your best Friend.

This was given to me in 1999 when I had to end the suffering of my dog Candy, I hope it touches you like it did me...

If you’re a Christian, you’ll be together again. I’ve lost pets I’ve rescued and it’s very hard. The best thing to remember is that nobody else loved him like you did, and every day he had with you, he was loved and valued highly.

And know it will get better. They are just gone for now, not forever. That makes it more bearable.
