I’m no damn yankee and I say pa-kahn, I don’t say pee-can. Many of those pronunciations depend on what area you lived in. Rural area in the South, more like to say pee-can, suburbs, not so much. I usually know when I’m talking to a yankee on the phone, but not always.

It’s “puh kahn,” everything else is something best used in private.

I am a Texan, and a PEE-CAN is what is put under a bed, after a night of consuming vast quantities of CO2 laden beer.

Just remember to Aussies, all of us in the States, even those born and bred in the heart of Dixie with CSA veterans on both sides of the family, are all “Yanks”.

My sister in law is from Long Island and she says peecan. It’s more of a yankee thing, I don’t car what they say. Have I heard Southerners say it? Yes, but not as much as yanks.

NYC - PEE-can. Or more like, PAH-can.
To: no gnu taxes
It’s an Algonquian word, and I’m not sure who decided to make it PEE-kan. But I think it sounds idiotic, because taking it phonetically, I can’t think of a single reason to make it a long “e” sound.
The original would be more like “Pakan” since the verb is Pake - to crack nuts.
Flame away, non-yanks. :-)
