I'm originally from Louisiana, but I have been working in North Carolina for some time.
Well, as part of my job, I was dealing with a lady on the phone, and all of a sudden she blurts out, "are you a yankee"? I say, "why would you ask me that"
It seems I said the word "pecan," and pronounced it puh-KAHN and she felt it should be pronounced PEE-can. I told her I am from Louisiana and we consider her to be the yankee.
She took it all in good stride, but from what I have discerned since then, PEE-can is definitely the more yankee version.
I like cheese
Yeah, I’m a Yankee. From New York! You godda problem wit’ dat? ;)
I’m from MA and I would pronounce it PEE-kahn.
I say PEE-Khan.
Southern Michigan has a lot of southerners and its transformed our accents.
I’m no damn yankee and I say pa-kahn, I don’t say pee-can. Many of those pronunciations depend on what area you lived in. Rural area in the South, more like to say pee-can, suburbs, not so much. I usually know when I’m talking to a yankee on the phone, but not always.
You call it corn, we call it maize.
It’s “puh kahn,” everything else is something best used in private.
I am a Texan, and a PEE-CAN is what is put under a bed, after a night of consuming vast quantities of CO2 laden beer.
I grew up in back woods (err swamp) Florida and we pronounced it pah-KUAN.
Just remember to Aussies, all of us in the States, even those born and bred in the heart of Dixie with CSA veterans on both sides of the family, are all “Yanks”.
We call em nuts.
May shah...let me told you somtin’...we always called dem tings peee——kans.
A cajun from Loreauville, La.
you say “to-MAY-to”, i say “to-MAH-to”, my BIL in illinois says “’mater”
My sister in law is from Long Island and she says peecan. It’s more of a yankee thing, I don’t car what they say. Have I heard Southerners say it? Yes, but not as much as yanks.
Texas...puh-KAHN
I use to live in NC and it would drive me up the wall to hear pea kuhns called p cans. I would always tell them that a P Can was the molasses can we put under the bed at night!
NYC - PEE-can. Or more like, PAH-can.
It’s an Algonquian word, and I’m not sure who decided to make it PEE-kan. But I think it sounds idiotic, because taking it phonetically, I can’t think of a single reason to make it a long “e” sound.
The original would be more like “Pakan” since the verb is Pake - to crack nuts.
Flame away, non-yanks. :-)
