Christians in China: Is the country in spiritual crisis? (More Christians than in Europe?)
BBC ^ | September 11, 2011 | Tim Gardam

Many of China's churches are overflowing, as the number of Christians in the country multiplies. In the past, repression drove people to convert - is the cause now rampant capitalism?

It is impossible to say how many Christians there are in China today, but no-one denies the numbers are exploding.

The government says 25 million, 18 million Protestants and six million Catholics. Independent estimates all agree this is a vast underestimate. A conservative figure is 60 million. There are already more Chinese at church on a Sunday than in the whole of Europe.

The new converts can be found from peasants in the remote rural villages to the sophisticated young middle class in the booming cities.

Of the dozens of people I know who go to TRADE in China, none of them report being ‘evangelized’ or some ‘brother in the Lord’, offering some testimony to God’s Goodness! I’ve come to doubt many of these reports.

Just curious, did they ever both to ask the Chinese about their church, or did they just assume all Chinese are bhuddists?

We actually met a member of the underground church.

Of course, we were there to adopt via a christian adoption agency.

Christians in China: Is the country in spiritual crisis?

I would say yes, "crisis" in the sense of circumstances in which much is in flux, and from which dramatic outcomes, for good or ill, may be expected.

Looks like a Protestant church in St Petersburg, Russia that I went to about 18 years ago. It was filled to the brim, overflowing with people. It was an amazing site.
