some of my fondest childhood memories are of being awakened by the sounds of freight trains on a summer’s night.

I share a similar memory. Used to hear the coal trains in southern West Virginia all during the day and night. Later, after we moved away to where the were no trains, it took two months before I could get a good nights’ sleep. I really missed those trains, especially the steam engines.
