Diverging widely from the mean does correlate well with lower intelligence as well as other genetic maladies, for instance crossed eyes and very large breasts in women. This implies inbreeding to some extent, perhaps traceable to founder effects, the so called genetic bottlenecks.

Wide divergence from the mean doesn't only apply to a physical attribute that is much larger, though, it applies to much smaller as well.
