Muffins costing $16 (£10) and biscuits at $10 were among the "extravagant and wasteful" conference spending by the US justice department, a report has found.

[...]

The justice department said it accepted the findings, adding that it had taken steps since 2009 "to ensure that these problems do not occur again".

[...]

The report found that the justice department had spent $4,200 on 250 muffins at an August 2009 legal conference at a hotel near the White House.

A justice department spokeswoman told reporters that took place at a time when there were no strict limits on food and beverage spending.

The department spent $121m on more than 1,800 conferences in 2008 and 2009 - exceeding its own spending limits, according to the audit.

[...]

The department said it had already taken action to reduce conference spending, which it said had fallen the first six months of this year.

But Republican Senate Judiciary Committee member Chuck Grassley said in a statement: "People are outraged, and rightly so."

Nothing is too good for our Feds!

Personally, I think the serfs should carry them about on litters, while fanning them, keeping them shaded, and feeding them peeled grapes.

The serfs always drop the litters, sooner or later.

There was a quote from the Civil War on providing goods to the Union military that went something to the effect that you could sell anything to the government in any quantity at any price you had the nerve to charge. It’s obvious that is still in effect. I don’t excuse the idiot at the Justice Department who signed off on the bill. But how could the hotel charge anyone, even the government, $16 for a pastry?

From a historical movie: in XVI century's Britain they used thin golden leaves to bake cakes, so those $16-worth could have been of that kind.

Who is the idiot? These clowns got their muffins and you paid for them. As a bonus they got to poke you in the eye. The “progressives” and their media toadies have focused the debate on taxing the rich and fairness. The debate should be about the government spending.

In private sector - anyone caught doing this would be fired that day.

And this obviously is not a lone bad actor.

Someone has supervisory responsibility for these expense accounts. ANYONE with a signiture on this spending - needs to be fired for cause. TODAY.

I recently went on a rare trip. I arrived very late at my hotel. They charged me $12 for a 4” square sandwich that I picked up in the lobby. I wasn’t a happy camper.
