There is one incontestably great actor on the world stage today, and he has no interest in following our script. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin soon to be Russias president again has proven remarkably effective at playing the weak strategic hand he inherited, chalking up triumph after triumph while confirming himself as the strong leader Russians crave. Not one of his international peers evidences so profound an understanding of his or her people, or possesses Putins canny ability to size up counterparts.

Youre right, my mistake. Russia has never occupied Holland. To date.

Demographically dying countries don't expand anywhere. Let's return to this issue in about, say, 5 years. OK?

Every time I see a picture of Medvedev I have to remind myself that Dave Matthews is not in charge of Russia.

I found a
website you might enjoy; it's premise is to show images of Putin at home and abroad, and how uncomfortable they appear in the presence of Vlad. [Excuse some of the sources: HuffPost ...gag!] Even his wife and dog....
Never mind his wife, even the dog looks apprehensive. Lovely bit of Soviet-style dressing, too. Everything is made from the same cloth, even the sofa - possibly surplus military uniform. And that wall behind them? Thats Siberia.

Demographically dying countries don't expand anywhere. If you're referring to the increasing muslim population, KGB Putin could do like Stalin and get rid of loads of people real quick. And expansion is precisely what Putin and his boys have their mind on. First they'll retake their former satellite countries (Georgia, etc). Then move on from there, with their comrades in Latin America (Chavez and others) doing the same there.

Take a look at the birthrates and other demographics of Russia.
Their society is getting old real fast.
My point is that elderly societies, like elderly people, are much less often aggressively expansionistic than young societies or people.
Few have trouble recognizing this about young Muslim societies. I don’t see why we should have difficulty recognizing the opposite tendency for elderly post-Christian societies.

Thank you for the excellent links you posted. [Taking me some time to go through them] ....
**...countries revolted against false promises made by power-hungry rightist politicians and governments that sold the people on a type of corrupt capitalism peddled as free-market capitalism. While purporting to support freedom and free markets, these leaders often engage in a type of crony capitalism instead of true liberalization-oriented reforms.**This reminds me of old v present Mother Russia where today the differences lie in the fact that the old-guard Soviet officials did not have Swiss bank accounts, London townhouses or Riviera estates.
Mikhail Khordorkovsky v Vladimir Lisin...avoiding Russian politics seems the best policy for Russian capitalists.

Fine with me.
In fact, I think Russia is more likely to shrink than expand. Its possession of Siberia and particularly the Far East is demographically ludicrous. If not for nukes the facts on the ground in these areas would have changed quite some time ago.

LOL. That is bl@@dy hilarious! Thank you.
