Is the Chevy Volt a sales flop? (just 723 Sold In Sept.)

General Motors has repeatedly claimed a sales target for 2011 of 10,000 units for the plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt sedan. But, nine months into the year, they've only shipped 3,895 off the lot.

In fact, in September sales numbers, released an hour ago, GM sold only 723 Volts. Will GM fail to meet its own sales predictions?

(SNIP)

To give you an idea of how few vehicles that is, here are just a few of the GM vehicles that sold better than the Chevy Volt this month:

Cadillac Escalade - 1,527 Chevrolet Colorado Pickup - 2,171 Chevrolet Avalanche - 1,861 Chevrolet Suburban - 5,246 Buick Lucerne - 1,068

That last car, the Buick Lucerne, is even more ironic considering it's made on the very same assembly line as the Chevy Volt — yet the Buick-for-blue-hairs still managed to sell almost 50% more units this past month.

Compare those sales with the vehicle most pundits position as a direct competitor — the Nissan Leaf all-electric car. Nissan sold 1,362 Leafs during the month of August and 1,031 during the month of September. Year to date, they've sold 7,199 — twice the number of Volts GM has shipped off dealer lots.

And most sales are to GE and GOVERNEMT.... I often wondered how many tons-of-coal-per-mile an Lectric Car gets. Anybody have the data?

Considering that the coal-fired plants need to keep running 24/7, I would think the cost in coal would be nearly prohibitive to operate a car.

I think calling the Chevy Volt a ‘sales flop’ is an insult to legitimate sales flops everywhere.

Monumental failure might be a better term.

It’s not too hard to imagine a customer on a Chevy lot looking at the Volt ($41k) and the Cruze ($17k). It’s almost impossible to imagine that customer buying the Volt.

The Camaro is cheaper.
I can’t imagine a REAL GUY looking at the sticker and saying, “Hmmmm....Volt for $41k......Camaro for $35K...........decisions, decisions.....”.........

Consider this. If Obamacare is constitutional, as the libs maintain, what's to keep Congress from passing a law requiring Americans to buy electric cars? I wouldn't put it past this bunch.

A sales flop? But, but....

Motor Trend selected the Volt as its Car of the Year.

Which is but one reason why Motor Trend has ZERO credibility.

Yes, it’s a flop - GM is trying to sell it for half its original sticker price, but we still don’t want it.

None of the “green” proponents want to discuss the very non-green materials that go into making the Volt batteries. Same goes for those gigundous windmills and solar panels —very toxic materials go into these “green” products that are expensive and have huge “carbon footprints” when you count all the production to make these things.

Only one way to make it all Green for the Lefty envirowacks - No electricity; No heating or air conditioning your home; No food production or distribution beyond your own property; No travel beyond where your own feet can take you (don’t want all that dung left behind by your mule). Nice world to live in, heh - but not for the Lefties, just you and me.

I wonder if this is actually according to plan. People on FR were ridiculing GM months ago when sales were even lower, so it sounds like they are ramping up. The latest I heard GM was planning to sell 10K this year, and 40K next year.

So imagine if the sales numbers for Oct., Nov. and Dec. continue ramping up - say 1.5K in October, 2.5K in Nov. and 3K in Dec. That gets you into the ballpark of 10K for the year and in line for next year's expected sales results.

I think the Volt is a stinker too. But I think people may be badly misjudging these sales numbers, or at least jumping the gun.

There were somthing like 936 Corvettes sold in August and it is intended to be a limited production vehicle.
