I came out of schools in the 1960s and 70s believing the lie that the Pro-Slavery Southern Democrats went through a name change. I remember reading in a textbook that in the 1800s they called them selves the “Democratic Republicans”, and later dropped the Democrat in the title, and became the just the Republicans. I don't know how long I believed that crap?

The Democratic Republicans became the Democrats.

I notice that wikipedia claims “...The other main faction [of the Democratic Republicans], led by John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay, formed a new party initially known as the National Republicans; it evolved into the Whig Party, the northern wing of which eventually became the civil-war-era Republican Party.”

This seems like another wikipedia prevarication to me, though I’m hardly an expert in this area.
