A solid future for the Kalashnikov

Rumors are swirling that Russia will cease producing the ubiquitous rifle, but nothing better has yet come along.

Reports that the Russian Ministry of Defense has discontinued purchases of the legendary AK-74 assault rifle made headline news in the Russian media.

In fact, the Russian military stopped buying Kalashnikovs about 15 years ago, because there were too many of them. Both the army’s stockpiles and factory warehouses are overflowing with all versions of the rifles, as are the country’s armories. According to Russian experts, the stockpiles would supply several armies the size of Russia’s in addition to all the world’s armies combined. General Nikolai Makarov, the chief of the General Staff of Russia’s Armed Forces, indirectly corroborated those estimates several days ago

They could send a couple to me, but I’d rather have the 47.

No, the AK-74 was an upgrade.

The rifle Sgt. Kalishnikov is holding is, I believe, and AK-74.

I'm not surprised the Russians have stopped ordering them. They've got millions and millions of them laying in storage. Not to mention the tens of millions they distributed around the world since the 1950's.

I know there are at least 3 of these fine weapons that will remain in service to our family for generations to come. At less than $400 a copy, every freedom loving American family should have one per person in the house.

Actually, that’s the AK-46. The AK-46 has a short stroke piston/tilting rod system that is more accurate than the unitary piston-rod-bolt carrier assembly of the AK-47. It was determined that the AK-46 was not sufficiently durable for conscript field use, so Kalashnikov went back to the drawing board and came out the next year with the definitive Kalashnikov.

Thank you for the information. But I stand by my statement that every freedom loving family in America should have at least one of Sgt. Kalishnikov’s fine weapons in their home.

Actually, there are at least two basic weapons that any free family should own, that came of Soviet origin. Besides the ubiquitous AK, owning a bolt-action Mosin-Nagant, and at LEAST one can of ammo for it, is a base requirement. . .

I’ve got three too, and an SKS.

Wasn’t disputing you at all. Absolutely agree-an armed people is a free people. And the Kalashnikov is as good as anything.

I like the way you think Salgak. There's a couple copies of the venerable Mosin residing next to our Kalishnikovs. Personally I get a hell of a kick out of the historical irony of recommending weapons that were the symbol of Statist governments the world over be in the hands of free men and women here in America.

Once the troubles start here, we'll put a hell of a hurt on 'em.

Glad to know I’m in good company. My Mosin Vietnam bringback is in the safe along with AK(s), SKS(s), and a couple of Nagant revolvers. The latter are fun for explaining to dinner guests exactly how `russian roulette’ worked. My ammo stash is like money; each cartridge is as much a coin as it is a lethal load.

It’s hard to hate General Kalashnikov for just doing his part as a Soviet patriot. He didn’t get rich off his design and in fact a few years ago there was a full page ad in American Rifleman for `Kalashnikov Vodka’ heck I thought it was a joke.

Anywhere in the world weapons are a form of wealth and thank G-d in America it’s still legal. I don’t think the BATFE will go KGB on us cause nobody likes to go after a victim who can shoot back. 2012 will be more trash about bitter clingers and their guns so I guess I won’t get invited to any fancy cocktail parties; who cares because my wife is a Army pistol champion and I wouldnt trade her for nobody you always should count your blessings I know I do.

Anyway, the weapons of tyranny have become the tools of freedom thats how I see my commie bloc guns. Only in America.

Well met, elcid. As I said there's more than a little historical irony in the fact that these weapons, designed for use by some of the most monstrous Governments in human history, are now in the hands of free American men and women for use in defending their freedoms.

Anywhere in the world weapons are a form of wealth

That's an incredibly astute observation. Thanks.

The rifle Sgt. General Kalishnikov is holding is, I believe, and AK-74.

There, fixed it for you. He was a Sgt when he designed the AK-47, but he retired a General.
