LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Hardware store manager Mike Dowling wants to be clear: His shovels might slow an attacking zombie, but you'll to need something else to put the final nail in the creature's coffin.

"I wouldn't say it's for killing zombies," the veteran Omaha store manager said. "But it's helpful for cleaning up if you ever have to."

I, for one, am glad the retail hardware industry is finally taking the Inevitable Zombie Apocalypse seriously.

Zombies and vampires have long been popular monsters, but for some years now we’ve just been deluged with them in pop culture. I wonder if there’s a particular reason for the heightened fascination.

Because they have been humanized. Meaning they have been portrayed as having feelings like human beings.

As an aside from that, I think he should do a gun promotion for the coming zombie apocalypse. A lot of them have been popping up around the country. I wouldn’t mind having a chance to win a Remington 870 or a Judge.

I have a theory that's semi-serious. I think it has to do with conditioning people to believe that a resurrection of the dead is somehow evil. This is in contrast to the biblical teaching that there will be a resurrection of all the dead one day. In addition there was the resurrection of Jesus Christ there will be a resurrection from the dead of two witnesses in the end times.

‘Maybe it used to be your Aunt but it’s not anymore’. LOL. I just pictured my aunt on my grandmother’s side. (She’s still very much alive).

I have a theory that's semi-serious. I think [the pop culture boom of zombies and vampires] has to do with conditioning people to believe that a resurrection of the dead is somehow evil. This is in contrast to the biblical teaching that there will be a resurrection of all the dead one day. In addition there was the resurrection of Jesus Christ there will be a resurrection from the dead of two witnesses in the end times.

That's an interesting theory, one that I'd never thought of, and I think it holds water. Certainly a lot of the prominent vampire and supernatural monster authors from H. P. Lovecraft to Stephen King have had a hearty contempt for traditional Christianity. Besides that, commonly religious beliefs such as the idea of an afterlife can bleed out into the irreligious culture and take different forms. Even some avid atheists, notably Vladimir Nabokov, have believed in the immortality of the soul. He even appears to have entertained the ida of humans reincarnating as animals.

I think we use a “Zombie Apocalypse” because it is politically incorrect to use racial, ethnic, or political labels appropriate to the potential threats. Hence the generic Zombie Apocalypse instead of reds, blacks, hispanics, yellow hordes, etc.

Its funny how they’re “humanizing” zombies, too. Pretty soon it even a “Zombie Apocalypse” will be politically incorrect...

No doubt there's something to the idea that national traumas inspire movies that sublimate them in some way or another. It's probably safe to say that the Japanese wouldn't have made post-WWII movies about monsters unleashed by nuclear explosions had we not (justly) dropped atomic bombs on them.

A number of people also see a racial inspiration for King Kong and alien invasion movies where the aliens target Los Angeles (ie they claim that in these movies space aliens stand in for Mexicans). These interesting theories have explanatory value, as any good theory must, but I don't find their suppositions provable. And I find that left-wingers, especially in academe, harp on them much too much, especially in the nearly useless "cultural studies" departments (when they aren't doing Marxist deconstructions of soup can labels).

Its funny how they’re “humanizing” zombies, too. Pretty soon it even a “Zombie Apocalypse” will be politically incorrect...

Perhaps soon we'll see a remake of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? with a zombie in place of Sidney Poitier. LOL
