Word For The Day, Wednesday, October 12, 2011 - languid
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 10/12/2011 | The traveling slacker

Posted on 10/12/2011 5:01:54 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

languid \LANG-gwid\ - adjective

1. drooping or flagging from or as if from exhaustion; weak
2. sluggish in character or disposition; listless
3: lacking force or quickness of movement; slow

Example sentence:

The trial proceeded at a languid pace as each attorney called up a whole roster of witnesses to testify.

Extra Example sentence:

"From Gadhafi to Irene, the month that ended yesterday was hardly languid: London erupted, Steve Jobs resigned and the markets returned to crisis mode. Oh, and that earthquake, huh?" -- From a post by Zachary M. Seward on the Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog, September 1, 2011

Did you know?
The letter L holds claim to a payload of words in English that connote a lack of energy or enthusiasm. Two of them -- "languid" and "languorous" -- derive from the same source, the Latin verb "languēre" ("to languish"). "Languid" describes the kind of sluggishness that one often experiences from fatigue or weakness ("the illness left her feeling languid"). "Languorous" applies more to someone who just doesn’t feel the will to get up and do anything ("he felt languorous on a rainy Sunday afternoon"). There is also "lackadaisical," which implies a halfhearted effort given from lack of care ("lackadaisical seniors just floating along until graduation"), as well as "listless," which suggests a lack of spirit caused by physical weakness, dissatisfaction, or sadness ("she was listless for a few weeks following the breakup").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with today's WFTD:

With a languid economy, Zero still refuses to acknowledge that government doesn't create jobs, it destroys them; government doesn't create wealth, it consumes it.

Government the Job Killer

No pushing at the door please!

Happy Humpday Everybody!

Only days left until BO's replacement is sworn in.

IT'S ABOUT DANG TIME!!!

Get to class you slackers! I've opened a new classroom, but now I must discretely sneak back down the hall to dry off and get dressed. Anybody who tries to grab the towel off my waist will find himself (or herself) in detention.

I’m here, but I just woke up, and I am still feeling too languid to write a post. I’ll be back later.

Languid is a good word for one’s readiness to hit the snooze button several more times.

Fortunately for me, coffee still manages to dissolve it, at least the surface accumulation.

Were the coffee pot not in the direction of the exit, I would never develop the momentum necessary to be safely launched into traffic.

The languid faint praise we now hear for Obama is in sharp contrast to the lauding acclamation of 2008. The screaming was so vociferous then that stooges were paid to faint on command, while real sycophants were in need of a lung aid to facilitate proper breathing. The Messiah’s voice and inflections, so soothing to the mesmerized masses, are, to me, like a nail dug into a chalkboard, like the sound Hillary Clinton produces when she’s dropping her “g’s” while “talkin” to the regular folk. Barack still has union support, the guild an anachronism left over from the days of Karl Marx (or, perhaps, Groucho) but I can only take Obama in small doses, with a dual gin on the rocks, with, perhaps, a very small dash of vermouth.
