ARLINGTON, Texas - A dog owner claims an Arlington police officer overreacted and shot his dog five times as his children watched.

Buck Yandle said two police officers and an animal control officer showed up at his home on Lake Jackson Drive last week. They were there about his dog Bucky, a basset hound and Rottweiler mix.

Neighbors said Bucky nipped a boy in the back after school. The dog never bit him, but it was enough to scare the 10-year-old.

Yandle stepped outside to meet with the officers. He said he closed the door and left his four children inside the house with Bucky. But the dog ran out because his 3-year-old son opened the door.

Bucky got agitated as police were talking to Yandle. Although he insists the dog did not lunge at or attack any of the officers, one of the officers shot and killed him.

While I do think that the dog should have either been in a room behind a closed door (or on a leash held by one of the older children) so that the three year old could not let him outside, shooting the dog was overkill.

What happened to "Sir, take your dog indoors or leash him?"

Overreactions and unnecessary escalations like this are responsible for a more negative perception of LEOs.

The word is out. Dogs nowadays just don’t respect the uniform.

Did you see the dog’s photo?

He was probably too -short- to see the cop’s badge.

Apologies. I missed that. Sometimes I have dumb C&P moments. :-)

Meanwhile yesterday in Michigan 41 year old police officer, Trevor Slot was deliberately run down and killed by bank robbers. Unfortunately stories like that don’t make FRee Republic because no one spends their days looking for them so they can post them.

Yabut, the dog’s mostly black. Obviously a case of racism.

It’s officers like this foul git giving other decent police officers a dreadfully foul reputation with the general public.

I don’t see any reason the animal control officer was not given the chance to subdue the dog first. I’d like to hear from the control officer - it never feels right to just read one side of the dispute.

Aw crap.

If I always have my Dobermann accompanied by my “blonde” Ibizans, will he get a break from this rampant anti-black-dog racism?

I seem to recall an article being posted about Arlington officer Jillian Smith being shot to death while protecting a child in a domestic violence situation. This occurred December 28, 2010.

Bad guys being bad guys. When the good guys come to your house and shoot your dog, it’s something else.

As a former police officer I have less trust for my former brethren than most of the public does. :) I know how the system really works.

That said, there are a lot of really honorable cops out there, but the ratio of human trash to stand-up heroes is a lot worse than most people (even the cop haters) probably think.

You’ve got that right. Lots of cop haters on FR,which surprised me when I first came across it.

We are in agreement with DU on that topic.

Discouraging.

The 12yo golden getting shot, in another story on here in the last day, was far more sympathetic IMO.

First, what is anyone doing with even a Rottweiler mix, let alone a family with an ill-supervised 3yo having one? Those are scary, scary dogs.

Second, what was the dog doing in a situation to nip a 10yo? And if the police were called because of that, it is understandable that they were on guard.

Third, it’s pretty basic that if the dog is to be in the house, while dealing with the police outdoors after such an incident, the dog should be indoors.

WTF is it with all these cops killing dogs.

Does a cop get 72 doughnuts in cop heaven or what?

As far as I can tell, around 500 police officers are killed in the line of duty per year.

Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs and think plenty of officers don’t use the same restraint with dogs that they use with people. I just find it to be a little sad that these stories seem to be of more interest to some FReepers than human officers giving their lives doing exactly what they’re paid to do.

A quick look at the news and it appears that 2 police officers were killed in the line of duty yesterday. 1 in PA and another in Mi.

Fortunately the 3 perps involved in both cases won’t be taking up any prison space.
