"Grimm": A sly, modern spin on the fairy tale
Salon ^ | October 28, 2011 | Matt Zoller Seitz

Everybody knows the modern world lacks enchantment. As a premise, that assertion is unprovable, but movies and TV shows have been saying it forever, so we just accept it as a trope, like, “The suburbs are shallow” and “When the railroads came, the Wild West became civilized.” Any program built around it is therefore better off not dwelling on it, and focusing its energies instead on other, more basic pleasures: characterization, plot, atmosphere. Two new network shows are built around fairy tales and the absence of magic in modern life — ABC’s “Once Upon a Time,” which debuted Sunday at 8 p.m. and repeats this Sunday at the same time; and NBC’s “Grimm,” which debuts tonight at 9 p.m./8 central. The first is officially one of the new season’s only new hits, but I thought it was awful: poorly written and directed and woodenly acted, except for Scottish actor Robert Carlyle’s performance as Rumplestiltskin); you can can check it out Sunday and see for yourself, but I wouldn’t recommend it, unless you’re the type of person who hears somebody say, “This milk is sour” and says, “Here, let me taste it.” NBC’s “Grimm” is much better — not a great show right out of the box, but much more confident and stylish, more sure of what it wants to say and how it wants to say it.

I Tivoed the first episode of Happily Ever After last week. It was ok so I added a season pass. I have my Tivo set for the first episode of Grimm tonight. If I like it I will add another season pass.

IMDB rates “Once Upon A Time” as 8.0 and “Grimm” as 7.2. One viewer said Grimm has potential. Looks like they filmed 10 episodes.

I watched 'Once Upon a Time' and thought it was just O.K. Will check out 'Grimm' tonight and see if it lives up to this reviewer's positive assessment.

Although neither series will probably be big hits, at least the creators are trying something relatively novel and not giving us yet another cop/doctor/lawyer drama or, worse yet, another 'reality' show. Lucky us.

I’m interested in watching Grimm to look for locations around Portland that I might recognize.

Watched both.

Grimm gave me a feeling of deja moo (I've seen this BS before) it wasn't bad, it just wasn't original.

"Once Upon A Time" is still too new to judge. But it has the potential to go either way, it may be very bad or very good. However I would judge it the more original of the two. I am just not sure there is enough there to make a good series. A mini-series yes, but 22 shows for three or four years? Not unless they roll out a whole lot more then they did in the Pilot.
