Chihuahua Chases Bear Up Altadena Tree
Arcadia Patch ^ | November 10, 2011 | Dan Abendschein

Altadena resident Alice Sarkisian Wessen has a chihuahua named "Husky" whose name apparently gives him the boldness of a wolf-sized dog: on Tuesday night Husky chased after a bear that was trying to get into Wessen's garbage can, resulting in the bear retreating up a tree.

Wessen's photo, on right, shows the bear hiding in the tree after Husky's "attack."

Like another Altadena chihuahua of legendary courage, Husky showed absolutely no fear in going after the bear, Wessen wrote in a local email group: "the bear ran from Husky the Chihuahua. Swear to god that pint sized idiot treed the bear."

She added in an email to Patch that Husky was rescued from the Pasadena Humane Society and usually spends his evenings sleeping under the covers in bed with his owners.

Wessen also noted that the bear bolt affixed to her garbage can held, and the bear did not get in.

Though it is impossible to tell whether a bear in one sighting is the same as in another, there have been several recent sightings in that area, and one at JPL, not so far away:

LOL. Chiuahuas. Ours thinks he’s the biggest baddest thing in the neighborhood too. He also sleeps under the covers with us. As a matter of fact, he sleeps most of the day under the covers too. In that regard, he must think he’s a cat. Sheesh.

Little dogs have no idea they are little. We have a teacup yorkie who thinks she can take on the whole world with one paw tied behind her back.

I ran into three black bears (mom & cubs) while canyoneering above Altadena in Eaton canyon four months ago.

We just had a thrid dog adopt us. A Min Pin. He looks in the mirror and sees a 70lbs pit bull. I get a laugh when all 5lbs of him face up to our 60lbs Black & Tan Coonhound...

Ha, ha—ours does the same thing on all counts. There was a neighbor today stretching before a jog and our little dog, all 3.5 pounds of him, ran up to the man, barking, as if he was going to do something. He likes to go under the covers too—he’s always cold.
