Our noble natives didn't just use fire for camping, they used it for neighbor control and even some rudimentary rain cloud management. With cloud control it's possible to regulate the climate. It's bunk that we're between ice ages. As long as modern man inhabits Earth we'll never have another major ice age or hot age again. Soon we will never be hit by another major asteroid. With fracking technology might be even regulate earthquakes to manageable levels.

Only if we keep developing our technology. We do not have the technology to prevent the next ice age at this moment, though we are close. We need to develop commercial space transportation systems and start to exploit the resources of the solar system. Right now we, literally, have all our eggs in one basket, the Earth.

If we can keep accelerating our technological advances for only another 20 years, we will be able to stop an ice age from happening. Unfortunately, there is a large movement that is completely determined to stop all technological advance, at least in the free world.

30 years ago I read about a plan to counter global cooling. It was a system of satellites with huge mirrors to reflect more sunlight to the earth.

Global cooling is the real problem.

This is very close to a quote from Larry Niven’s “Lucifer’s Hammer”, where they are worried about a global ice age AND running out of oil that prevents it from coming.
