EVERETT, Wash. (AP) A grocery store security guard was fired after he told the father of a 4-year-old girl that she would face criminal charges for eating from a dried fruit package, a TV station reported.
The child's mother, Alissa Jones, said the father wasn't looking when the girl grabbed the package, ate a few pieces of fruit then returned it to a shelf at a Safeway store in Everett, Wash., KOMO reported Wednesday.
Safeway previously faced widespread criticism when a Honolulu couple were arrested over stolen sandwiches and had their 2-year-old daughter taken from them briefly by state officials.
In Washington, the guard took the 4-year-old and her dad to a room and said the girl would face charges and be banned from the chain, Jones said, adding the guard had the girl sign a paper acknowledging she wasn't allowed to enter any Safeway stores.

I guess the thought of informing the dad what happened and requesting he pay for the fruit never occurred to anybody?
seriously deluded.
make them pay for it, it should end there
He should have inquired as to whether this was the girl’s third strike and have her sent away forever.
Dammit Joe that would have made sense! The kid is only 4 he is not a serial shoplifter. I mean come on, he does not know any better.
Go figure.
Reminds me of the scene in “The Bank Dick” when W. C. Fields, as the bank security guard, grabs the little boy who’s wielding a toy gun.
“’And everyone understands what common sense is,’ Myers said.”
That’s not so according to my common sense.
Having a 4 y/o sign a document banning her? Yeah right that sounds binding. Safeway must be hoping the guard firing satisfies the father and hopes he doesn't come after them, legally speaking.
I am not saying what she did was right, but there are better ways to handle these situations and Safeway came up short.
The kids are starving because daddy is unemployed because Lady Obama wants to tax people who create jobs.
Americans who truly respect their own freedom need to understand the limits of what private security can legally do on private property. You're basically not obligated to do a damned thing they say except leave the premises. Any private citizen who attempts to detain you should soon wish they hadn't.
Patty Murray is proof that people in WA state do strange things.
While I agree that the security guard was most likely out of line, the fact that the store had a security guard at all means they are having a problem with theft there.
Where I live, the supermarkets don’t have security guards, and often when my children were little and got cranky, I would let them eat some crackers while we were shopping, and of course buy the crackers.
But if the store had had security guards, I would know it was a low-trust high-theft situation, and not let them eat anything we hadn’t paid for yet. Bring a snack from home instead.
Smart kid, practicing ‘free market’ techniques.
Security practicing Nazi techniques.
Occupy Safeway.
