We used to get Blue crabs on the Cape (Cod) by using a trap that was a metal meshed pyramid shape with the sides hinged at the bottom. Stick a piece of fish to the center spike and lower it in the water. Wait 10 minutes and pull it up....three or four crabs at a whack. A fishing pole seems like an awfully slow way to do it.

We used chicken necks - crabs love chicken and don't let go
