Not all Thanksgiving tables will go without crab.
Its an unbearable sight for Dungeness crab lovers: Hundreds of crab pots sitting idle on the docks of San Franciscos Fishermans Wharf. A beef over price means commercial crab fishermen wouldnt be hauling in any of the delectable crustaceans in time for Thanksgiving. But that doesnt necessarily mean every Thanksgiving table will go without.
The strike by commercial fishermen has given recreational crabbers free reign on the oceans crab population. Although state regulations forbid anglers from catching Dungeness crabs in the San Francisco and San Pablo Bays, it doesnt prevent them from trying their luck outside the Golden Gate.
Thats why the Pacifica Pier was packed on Wednesday with amateur fishermen hoping to take matters into their own nets and go home with their ten crab limit.
Michael Pointer of Pacifica seemed to be the king of the pier crabbers, taking-in five large Dungeness crabs. Pointer said in most years, the run of crabs drops off once the commercial guys go to work. Needless to say, he wasnt shedding many tears over the ongoing price dispute.
I dont wish nothing bad on them, said Pointer. But they could argue another day or two and Id be happy.
Most of the fishermen on the Pacifica Pier eschew traditional crab nets in favor of fishing poles fitted with a snare-like lure. The device resembles a tangle of line, with a basket in the middle for bait. Fisherman Geoffrey Aiken said its success seems to be based on the law of averages.
Crab has eight legs right? Aiken asked, testing a reporters knowledge of biology. You get a chance of eight. Get it stuck in here, and come home to daddy.
Despite a biting cold wind, a sea lion loitering nearby, and umpteenth tangles of fishing line, Tolak Besman said the effort was worth the trouble.
Thats the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, is having that delicious crab you know you cant go and buy, Besman said, even though his bucket was still bare.
Unlike commercial crabbers, the recreational pier crabbers dont need a license or a fancy boat. But they do require a certain amount of luck something Vrina Orozco seemed to be a little short on. Although Orozco didnt catch a crab, she did manage to snare a tangle of a dozen abandoned crab nets beneath the pier eventually losing the net shed purchased earlier that day.
We were feeling its going to be a lucky day because tomorrows Thanksgiving, she said. But unfortunately, no.
Despite going home with a single crab between three friends, Eric Shank was happy to spend the day in the great outdoors. Like most, actually catching a crab seemed to be the icing on the cake. If I never got anything itd still be fun, Shank said.
Was this translated or does the reporter need to go back to 7th grade Language Arts class?
I came here for Lindsay Lohan pictures.
Needless to say, I'm somewhat disappointed.

Snag Your Own Holiday Crabs
He meant to say “Snatch Your Own Holiday Crabs”
Oh you’re bad.
In the early ‘70’s I was out with my Uncle, Dad, and brothers on a boat in the salt water part of the Rappahanock river (Virginia) having a slow day fishing. We had set several crab pots on the way out. So we cut up some Spots and baited our lines with the pieces and dropped them over the side. All the way to the bottom and back off a half turn. You put your finger on the line and when you feel a little tug, you ease it up to the surface. When the crab got near the surface, it let go as if to said, “Oh s***!” My Uncle would net the crab and toss it in the boat. Dad picked the crab up with tongs and put it on the cooler. Great time.
My youngest brother was standing up on the bow looking around the wind screen. Just as my Uncle tossed a netted crab in the boat, I pinched him on the leg and he panicked and dove overboard. Boy was he mad when we pulled him back in.
We steamed close to 150 crabs that night, with plenty of beer to go around. Made and froze a lot of crabcakes. I really miss those days.
We used to get Blue crabs on the Cape (Cod) by using a trap that was a metal meshed pyramid shape with the sides hinged at the bottom. Stick a piece of fish to the center spike and lower it in the water. Wait 10 minutes and pull it up....three or four crabs at a whack. A fishing pole seems like an awfully slow way to do it.
Crab Ping
The bay area is a great place to catch crabs, And many STD’s too!

So am I.
We baited our pots with whole chickens. Of course you have to let them sit out in the sun for a while before you drop them off over the side of the boat.
