Woman who drove into Palm Beach County canal had just finished Black Friday shift
A tired Target worker who was heading home after an early morning Black Friday shift had to be rescued by a deputy after she drove her car into a canal in Pahokee.
The unidentified woman somehow lost control of her car and drove into the canal near Much City Road and Connors Highway at 7:46 a.m., Palm Beach County Sheriffs spokesman Teri Barbera told the Palm Beach Post.
Luckily, Deputy Frank Mayo, who was also on his way home after working his shift, responded and jumped into the water to save the 36-year-old woman, who had called 911 and told deputies she couldnt swim.
Mayo took off his gunbelt and tried to help the woman, who was clinging to her car, but she started pulling him into the 20-foot deep water.
If I drown, I cant help her, Mayo told the Post.
Mayo was able to get the woman to the surface, and fellow deputies threw a rope to pull them to shore.
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital and later released.
I’ve been tired many, many times while driving but never drove into a canal. Wonder what the TRUTH is...
100 to one she was dialing her cell or texting....
I wonder if she fell asleep? Never done that before but I know some people who work rotating shifts and have fallen asleep at red lights. Scary, huh?
I am just shocked that they even have a Target store near Pahokee. :) BTW I think that would be Muck City Rd, not Much City Rd. I think for a long, long time muck is pretty much all that Pahokee was made up of.
I'm sure the insurance company will investigate
Oh no! Corporate greed made this poor soul drive their vehicle into the river! Oh the Humanity!
I’m glad the person wasn’t injured :-D
People who work in retail tend to get worked like dogs.
Odds are that she probably had to work until midnight and was expected to be there by 7am and she had to work 10 hours.
Seems to me that people drive into canals quite frequently in Florida. Canals are everywhere ... you can hardly drive off the road without hitting one. Someone is really reaching to hit back at Target since Target refused to back down from opening on Thursday night vs. Friday morning.
You’re probably right. I keep mine in my purse and can’t ever find the darn thing unless it’s ringing.
I didn’t participate in Black Friday this year. I am glad. It’s horrific. I have loved the Target commercials leading up to this year. Seems she could have starred in them if she was that tired.
One can say she was way off ‘Target’ on her driving skills.
Bullseye!!
And when was the last time a traffic accident was attributed to working at Target??
