Deputies: Dog Calls 911, Gets Shot

A 911 hang up call Manatee County Sheriff's officials believe was initiated by a dog, resulted in the dog getting shot in Bradenton on Sunday morning.

According to MCSO spokesperson Dave Bristow, Deputy Will Kelley responded to a home on West 21st Street to check on a 911 hang up when the owner opened the door of the home, but was unable to keep the dogs inside.

Bristow said the dogs' owner, Kathleen Derosa, opened the door and tried to squeeze out without letting her two roughly 65 pound Bull Mastiff-Pit Bull mix dogs get out.

The dogs forced their way out of the door and began aggressively lunging and trying to bite the deputy, Bristow said.

Kelley retreated to avoid the dogs, but was forced to shoot one of the dogs.

The dog was taken to the vet. The dog's condition is unknown at this time. Kelley was uninjured.

Bristow said the 911 call is believed to have been generated by the dogs stepping on the phone inside the house.

Traditionally, the courts have held that wrongful death or injury of a dog or other animal was essentially no different than damages to other property. Earlier this month, an appeals court in a Texas case held that a suit could proceed adding sentimental value to wrongful loss of a pet.

Things could get interesting...it may actually become profitable to have the cops shoot your dog.

How are the cops, or anybody, supposed to ascertain that a 911 call is bogus?

They don’t know who made the call and, are the cops supposed to really go away upon somebody answering the door saying that it was a mistake?

That’s a good way for a murderer to throw off the police, by answering the door and saying that it was all a mistake, so the cops can go away now.

Story says it was a 911 hang up call. That would mean the 911 operator could call back to see what happened. But if the dog made the call, the phone would have to be off the hook to dial and how how could a dog hang up the phone, anyway?

The 911 operators can see the phone number where the call is made. I've had them call back on "hang-up" calls, for example, when I was working at a 7-11 and someone used an outdoor payphone to call 911 and immediately hung up.

Didn't the operator try calling back in this case?

I am one of those who is often critical of the cops killing anything and everything they think they can but given the breed of dog and if this was reported properly, then the cop probably had no other choice.
