RI Governor Insists On 'Holiday Tree'

(NewsCore) - A Rhode Island lawmaker is calling Gov. Lincoln Chafee "Governor Grinch" for defying politicians and deciding that the state would have a "holiday tree" instead of a "Christmas tree."

The governor defended his decision by arguing that it is in keeping with the state's founding in 1636 by religious dissident Roger Williams as a haven for tolerance -- where government and religion were kept separate.

Chafee, an independent, said in a statement issued Tuesday that his stand was a continuation of past practice, "and does not represent a change of course on my part."

But Rep. Doreen Costa, called the governor a "Grinch."

By having a tree, he is inherently implying Christmas as the holiday of preference.

Unless he includes a holiday menorah, holiday kwanza basket, holiday suicide bomber....

If govt and religion are to be separated, shouldn’t Dec 25th be a workday for government employees?

“Hope”
This simple and optimistic Rhode Island state motto is featured on both the state seal and state flag. The Rhode Island state motto was adopted in the year of 1875.

According to the historical writer, Howard M. Chapin, the biblical phrase “hope we have as an anchor of the soul” is considered the main inspiration and background for the Rhode Island motto “Hope”.

Ironic that Chaffee considers calling a Christmas Tree a Holiday Tree being “tolerant”. Just who is being tolerant here?

I guess Scrooge Chafee would make it a crime to call it Christmas.
Soon, the Marxist will accept only Winter-fest.

What a pathetic excuse for a man. An embarassment to his family, friends and entire state.

Chafee has always been a leftist coward and doucebag.

Unfortunately the liberals, who live in an economically devasted state due to its socialist policies and unlimited illegal immigration tolerance, keep electing Rhode Island “Reds”.

I hope the whole fucking state sinks into the ocean (I’ll lose a couple of liberal relatives but what the hey). They don’t deserve to exist. Next, Connecticut, Vermont and Massachusetts.

God I love global warming and melting icebergs.

“I’m sick of being politically correct,” she said. “Nobody’s been offended by calling a Christmas tree a Christmas tree. If we have a Menorah in the State House, what are we going to call it — a candle with sticks?”

So Costa has decided to erect her own Christmas tree — at the State House. And she plans on lighting it on Dec. 6, the same day Chafee plans to host the official “holiday” tree-lighting event.

“We’re going to sing Christmas carols and drink hot chocolate,” she said. “And I’m going to make a sign — Christmas tree lighting to the right and holiday tree to the left. We’ll see who gets the crowd.”

Awesome!

I was thinking about my mom saying she got so few kids trick or treating, and Barney Frank’s self-serving comments about ‘gay marriage’ and all the other alterations we make to our traditions because in our new open-mindedness, everything that’s been around for longer than five minutes is evil, white-male propaganda, while inclusion means smiling and pretending all religions have had equal impact on this nation’s culture, and that we have to rename things as proof that we’re not bigots or something.

As an atheist, I find this stuff insane. I understand that the vast majority of people in my country are believers in God, and in a Christian God. Just as I don’t mind that my taxes go to education when I don’t have kids, I don’t care that my taxes may go to putting up lights or trees that make the season more enjoyable for everyone. If we can sink billions into services for people who shouldn’t be here or who don’t work, why not a few bucks for everyone to enjoy, even people like me who don’t believe in the religious element?

I’ve never, ever met someone who calls a Christmas tree a Holiday Tree.

I’m sure people are bored with this discussion, but I think it is indicative of very important things going on in this country.
