I need some advice.
I have a very special friend who loves good Scotch. He has everything else, so I thought I might wrap up a good Scotch for Christmas.
I know he'll use this, unlike some worthless gift he won't want (I actually got him a massage for his birthday last sumer and he wouldn't go -- it's a macho thing).
Okay I know this thread is going to raise some silly answers, but I am a beer drinker, and don't know a thing about the "refined" spirits.
Id appreciate any serious answers to my question.
Try to find a Macallan single malt in your price range.
You want to get him The Glenrothes! Absolutely the best there is! At any rate, whatever you get him make sure it’s single malt, not that blended swill!

When I drank scotch I developed a pronounced preference for single malt over blends before I even realized single malt was supposed to be superior.
Dewars tasted almost sour to me, and practically all blends were harsh. The only blend I could really tolerate well enough to enjoy was Dimple (Pinch), which was smooth and mild.
Glenmorangie was my “normal” choice, with any number of others reserved for special occasions. Never was much of one for the really peaty “boutique” scotch. Laphroaig was almost undrinkable to me despite having such a glowing reputation.
2 things:
1) Some sort of single malt, properly aged bottle will be much appreciated.
2) Where else are you going to find a web site like FreeRepublic.com where you’ll see 800+ post NASCAR threads but also solid discussions on the best Scotch to give an old friend?
A very good friend of mine liked Drambuie.
It is a unique Scotch whiskey.
I never drank it, but I did like JB and Haig & Haig (when I was younger and drank).
Just ask him what his favorite flavor of scotch is.

Yea, I am a redneck I guess. Love my beer, in fact, love it so much I consume it in quantities, and have to buy the cheap stuff like Milwalkee’s Best (sp) light. It does the job though (LOL).
Grammy, what are you doing on a thread about drinking too much? (LOL).
My first editor (when I was a green young reporter) told me I needed to kick the beer habit and drink Scotch, to blend in with the high class people I’d encounter at events. I took a couple of sips of that, and said “No thank you.”
It depends on how much you want to spend. Balvenie is great stuff, but a bit expensive (especially if buy the older stuff).
If you are more on a budget, Famous Grouse is very good for the price.

You can’t go wrong with Macallan.
It’s a nice, well balanced and smooth. Goes will with cigars and works best at room temp but stands up well in ice.
Johnny Walker, Dewars sucks. If he likes scotch get a single malt. Glenlevet, Glenfeddich are what I get because it’s easy to find. That price range or above.
Go to a store with a good selection. They will know what sells well in premium brands.
You can spend as much as you want. If he’s work $100 buy some $100 scotch, if he’s worth $50 buy some $50 scotch, if he’s worth less than that why bother.
