Help find a missing medical alert dog named Bella

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A father in Point Loma is begging for the public's help to find his baby's missing service dog.

Thirty-eight-year-old Brian Margarita is a single father raising a baby with epilepsy, but not totally alone. His dog Bella, a purebred Doberman pinscher and certified therapy dog, sleeps next to nine-month-old Reese's crib every night and barks when she has a seizure.

"Obviously there are baby monitors in here that I can hear the baby, but there's no way I could react as fast as the dog senses things almost before they happen," Brian said.

Last Saturday, somehow two gates mysteriously opened and Bella disappeared. Brian's other dog Harley stayed put, and when he called a Doberman rescue for help, they told him Bella was most likely stolen.

"That was the first question they asked me, were hear ears cropped, and I'm like yeah, and they said yeah this happens a lot more than you think," Brian said.

Prayers for finding the dog and getting him back to this poor man and his baby.

We watched our precious 9 month old grandaughter and our grand-dog for 4 days this past weekend. Cannot imagine what he’s going through.

I hate to be ‘Debbie Downer’ but chances are good that the poor dog is going to be target practice for some south of the border gang-banger’s fighting pit bulls.

Very strange that a dog so dedicated to the child would not have aroused the dad if an intruder was in the house.

Also the other dog was ‘silent’ and nothing caused the baby monitor to go off?.

Are ‘service’ dogs also trained as watchdogs or are some traits unlearned?

This dog is also missing from the San Diego area, he was last seen Wednesday. He is microchipped, his most noticeable feature is an enlarged left ankle from an old injury that did not heal correctly.

Yes they are certified as watchdogs, EMT-1s and are
licensed to drive emergency vehicles.

Well, I tweeted and Facebooked the story. I have a lot of doggie friends, so you never know, maybe someone will see the dog somewhere.

No need to be snarky.

It was a legit question: was this therapy dog trained to only bark under certain conditions (seizures) and trained to not bark for others (visitors/intruders)?

It’s reasonable that the child was so dependent on the dog’s behavior/actions (breathing, growling and barking) that canine response to other stimuli was discouraged.

As far as I ascertain, the dogs were OUTside (”gates”), not inside.

Not that they shouldn’t bark (especially perhaps a Dobe).

I don’t really know, but I’ve never heard of “service” dogs being trained for guard duty - never even heard that for the very old and very concrete service of Seeing-Eye dogs.

Feel bad for the guy, worse for the baby. Having an epileptic child, I know the importance of a service dog.

But then, here comes my judgemental side....

If you have something you value, why would you leave it outside & unattended?

Just sayin...
