Vanity - Reluctant to "Search"?
December 18, 2011 | Vanity

Posted on 12/18/2011 9:04:52 PM PST by SMGFan

Just wondering, but are most people reluctant to type a title or keyword in Search before posting a topic? Oh, I try my best to see if a topic has been started before I post something. But multiple posting of a breaking news story? Nothing is so urgent that it needs to be posted so quickly. Sometimes scrolling down the first or next page will show a story has already been posted.

The strategy seems to be - post away and let the mods sort it out.

I just realized I can’t post to breaking news. How does one do that?

Wow! I was going to post the exact same thing! I'm glad I did a search and saw that you had already posted one, saving me the trouble and embarrassment.

Kudos and Thanks!

Mark

Well if you had cared to search before posting yourself, you would have seen that “Vanity” has already been posted before - in fact, multiple times.

The sad thing is that is what I thought about doing when I saw this thread....

I am going to doom this post for all eternity because I am going to be the voice of reason...one time, only once, I posted a thread without doing a search...naturally, it had been posted earlier and no less than 5 FReepers brought that to my attention before the mods yanked it. The funniest part was that I had more replies on my duplicate thread than the original thread ever got. That's when I began to suspect that there are a lot of practitioners of OCD on this site.

I’m with you, crazy. I don’t mind double posts because often I would have missed the news. Original posts can already be on the next page or two when I turn on FreeRepublic. I don’t start reading where I left off last time... I don’t spend THAT many hours on FR.

I do see double posts on the same page sometimes, and I generally pick the one with the most comments. Doesn’t bother me at all.

How hard can it be to:

1. Assume someone else has already found it and posted it?

(Which turns out to be the case 99.99% of the time.)

2. Search for keywords?

3. And even more so - actually scroll the main page?

BEFORE

Starting a thread...

I can understand postings within a few minutes of each other - it will happen. But 15 to 20 minutes later?

Clear indication that someone either doesn’t car or is ego driven - i.e., the want their name at the head of a topic on the main page.

=8-)

Notice that I haven’t started a single thread...simply because when I apply those three rules - sure enough - someone else has beat me to it.

And I don’t mind one bit.

=8-)

It’s the same people that park their shopping cart in one half of the aisle and their ass in the other half.

Or, maybe, just maybe, people are working on posting the same story at the same time and search comes up negative. It takes several minutes to post a story.

Maybe you ought to apply to be a moderator.

I always do a search on titles before posting articles. Saves me grief from the posting police.

I thought you’d show up on this thread. Did you ever get your official FR Posting Police badge?
