The US soldier accused of leaking thousands of government secrets struggled with emotional problems and gender issues, a court has heard.
Private Bradley Manning faces 22 charges of distributing state secrets to anti-secrecy site Wikileaks.
But his defence have questioned whether he should have been given access to the sensitive documents in the first place.
The hearing, at Fort Meade army base in Maryland, will determine whether Pte Manning should face a court martial.
(SNIP)
The defence says Pte Manning was suffering from stress, as a homosexual soldier at a time when soldiers in the US military could not be open about their sexuality - under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which has since been repealed by US President Barack Obama.
His defence team is also expected to argue that little harm came of the leaks, and that their release was in the greater public interest.

A play to the largely-gay mainstream US Media?
Ah, for the good old days when this scum would have been tied to a pole and shot dead (Hanoi Fonda first, of course).
If I were a homosexual, I'd be offended that this traitor implies that his homosexual problems would lead to treason.
C'mon, homosexuals, let's hear your outrage.
If a service member engaged in adultery (another sexual violation of the UCMJ) spied against our country and did exceptionally grave damage to our national security, that espionage would be okay too? Or is it only politically correct immoral conduct that excuses major felonies?
Here we go again — the left is never responsible for their own actions. Someone else ALWAYS is....yes, it was societies pressure on queers that made this happen. Yeah, right.
What other liberal “fairy tails” are we going to come up with today ???
No ...he’s a CROSS-DRESSER!
Has identity crisis. Military should not have sent him to Iraq. Because CD’s still top secret material. /s
Don’t forget striking a female superior officer. I think he got away with that as well.unbelievable what pc enables.
“If I were a homosexual, I’d be offended that this traitor implies that his homosexual problems would lead to treason.”
I thought the same thing. He must be the only homosexual in the military, because if there were others wouldn’t they all be turning traitor by this definition?
He knew the score when he voluntarily enlisted.
The mere fact that he released 720,000 documents - all of which he could absolutely not have read - precludes his claim of “whistle-blowing” as he had no idea what he was releasing.
If we were talking about 20 or so specific documents having been sent to a congressman, I’d almost be willing to accept the “no damage” portion of his defense.
“Gender issues?”
You mean he couldn’t tell if he was queer or just a faggot?
Manning is not confused he committed TREASON ON PURPOSE..
He knew exactly what he was doing..
It is the FACT that he committed treason that matters, not the motive. He did it, he pays.
He didn’t have gender issues; he had traitor issues. His level of treason is monumental and he needs to hang by the neck until dead.
You said "fairy" and "tail" in a thread on PC topics. I imagine any PC lurkers from Kos and DU would be offended by both.
On the contrary...it's not his gayness that we are supposed to see as the problem...it's the military's neanderthalic treatment of this poor victim for being gay.
What, he thought he could be Barney Frank’s girlfriend if he hurt his country?
Twenty years ago, the popular excuse would have been he grew up in an abusive home. Today, it’s sexual orientational confusion. There is no room for excuses. He did the deed, now it’s time to pay.
So they’re saying that gays are predisposed to being traitors? Quick, implement a ban on gays in the military.
