I used to be a big fan of these old guns but after personally seeing 4 or 5 blown receivers I only kept the somewhat collectible ones I own. I personally would not fire one now.

I was on the bench at a 100 meter tournament, when one of the "open bench" ranges called for help. One of these "Wonderful" pieces of junk, had the rear reciever completely fail and the unfortunate shooter lost an eye. The Bolt sheared the rear Lugs and the fragments went through a pair of shooting glasses like they weren't even there. This is probably the most poorly designed and engineered designs on the market. (Here is another example of the poor engineering and materials that they are made of. Notice how the crack follows the "punch" marks in the crude labeling

>Logistics.

If things get Real Bad (tm), then we’ll need A LOT of logistics.
I don’t particularly relish having to water the Tree of Liberty, but it seems that time is swiftly approaching.

At this point everyone should start packing away supplies: food, fuel, ammo, arms...

Looks like a round fired after a squib. A bullet that fired from a bad load and was stuck in the barrel for those that don’t know what it means.

Lotsa FReepers know I LOVE me some Mosin. Have multiples here at the Backwoods Retreat. I reload 7.62 x 54R. My favorite load is 46gr of IMR43850, with a 150gr Sierra Game King (.303 diameter). It’s a killer.

Improper Head spacing is a deadly error.

Exactly correct. And as it is headspaced off the rim, overall length of cartridge is also important.

I've never had a Mosin blow up, though, despite HUNDREDS of rounds through mine. I try to buy the better looking barrels, and inspect before buying if I can.

In support:

I am not at all impressed with Russian engineering or craftsmanship.

Against support:

Not all of the Mozin Nagants were made in Russia. (Like AK-47s, many mods and differences in production by source)

I don’t own one, but a well made version would not frighten me. Looking at the failure photos, it appears there was an existing crack that is very old. The recent failure portion is evident from the photo.

One rifle, two or three are anctidotal, no matter have expensive the gun, some always fail. Give some factual data.

If the MN rifles were subject to consistant failure and dangerous, the denzins of the gun world would be screaming it from the roof tops.
