dictionaries ad nauseam | 29 December 2011 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

crepitate \KREP-i-teyt\, verb
To make a crackling sound; crackle.

Example sentences:
The lampwicks crepitate; their flames are about to go out, long mosquitoes flit in rapid circlings about them.
-- Gustave Flaubert, The Temptation of Saint Anthony

This horrible talk, however, evidently possessed a potent magic for my friend; and his imagination, checked for a while by the influence of his kinsman, began to ferment and crepitate.
-- Henry James, Stories Revived

Etymology:
Crepitate is from the Latin crepitare which meant “to rustle or chatter.”

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

"We first heard of an undocumented man named Obama ,
Who denied all the confusion with a Kenyan and with Osama.
But at every turn, he worked to have our country defeated,
With every enemy and disaster, he conspired to have us deleted,
His unlawful czars attacked America 'til it crepitated and strained,
until, using internecine attacks he led, suddenly nothing we knew, remained."

I have to agree with this person.
Fellow commenter Sharon argued: 'While I hate the way she dresses, I must admit that the cost of her clothing is her own affair and none of ours. Taxpayers are not paying for her wardrobe the last I heard.'
A+ for you.

The constant crepitation of the chattering class continues unabated, a sure sign of their advancing decrepitude.

I absolutely agree that she is spending her own money, and has every right to do so in any way that she sees fit. It is a great country that way. I just barf a little when she is held up as a style icon. Really? She’s no Jackie O, despite the press attempts to portray her as such. And it just shows a lack of judgment to pay that kind of coin for a simple sundress. The Duchess of Cambridge regularly shows up in dresses from Zara (my favorite store, btw) and looks great. If the sundress had come from J Crew, I would have said, “rock on, Michelle!”. But the price! That is buying a label, not the dress! And that is clueless.

As we crepitate with age, I hope more develop a sense of outrage about the health care system and what the idiot-in-chief and his minions are doing to us. A for you.

In Iowa, they’ll caucus, participate
But no candidate’s fire seems to crepitate
Michelle Bachmann, Mitt, Jon
Rick Santorum, Newt, Ron
No Reagans to make our hearts palpitate

(note my tagline)
