Word For The Day, Thursday, December 29, 2011 - crepitate
dictionaries ad nauseam | 29 December 2011 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

crepitate \KREP-i-teyt\, verb
To make a crackling sound; crackle.

Example sentences:
The lampwicks crepitate; their flames are about to go out, long mosquitoes flit in rapid circlings about them.
-- Gustave Flaubert, The Temptation of Saint Anthony

This horrible talk, however, evidently possessed a potent magic for my friend; and his imagination, checked for a while by the influence of his kinsman, began to ferment and crepitate.
-- Henry James, Stories Revived

Etymology:
Crepitate is from the Latin crepitare which meant “to rustle or chatter.”

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I was in the midst of a deep oscitation in bed when my neck did crepitate loudly, but the relief felt was enough to let me snooze another 10 minutes this morning.

Glad to see someone else knows the “other” definition. There was some French guy who actually had a stage act crepitating in front of delighted audiences! I submitted this word to xsmommy, about a month ago, for her “Word of The Day” threads. Did it as kind of a joke. Thought the responses might be fun! I’m kind of surprised that someone else has used it!

When you get home and start missing Italian, you will have to come and visit our new parish. it's a lovely little church, with an ethnic rather than a geographic base. We were assigned parish family #202, so it's pretty small, but intimate and we like that. 9 am and noon masses are in English. 10:30 am is in Italian.

You spelled it right.

Q: Come stai? (how are you doing/being? and you used the you-familiar, which is fine for us :)
A: Sto bene.

I’ll pass on the Italian mass. I am just barely able to function linguistically. It is really frustrating me now because I understand about 40% of the words around me, but cannot put them together fast enough. When people slow down for me, I can at least communicate.
