Saw War Horse today. Great movie for those that enjoy the "old" way of making movies. Very tastefully done. Magnificent cineamatography. Great score. Showed the horror of war without burying you in gore. Cheesy in some places but a very uplifting movie.

Oh good because I have friends who are taking me to see it this weekend for my birthday.

Do they show horses being killed? I’m a little leery of seeing it.

You should enjoy it. I don’t go to many movies but this is a great one. As a professiohal horsewoman, I cansay they were very authentic with the horse parts.

Saw it yesterday. Certain scenes were so graphic I had to look away a few times. Enjoyed the movie but I do love horses...would not recommend it to anyone that is NOT an animal lover. Also, the characters faded in and out just a little too much for me. However, I enjoyed it and am glad I went.

Is the movie about the horse, or more about those who ride or come in contact with?

It is very carefully filmed. No real violence shown close up. I took my eleven year old grandson. He’s pretty sensitive and did fine. Horses are killed, but it’s not too bad. It was a two kleenes film for me and I cry when they play the National Anthem. It is NOT ‘Ol Yella. Great ending.

"..the characters faded in and out just a little too much for me.."

Ah - I think you answered my question above. It's about the people that were around the horse more than it is about the horse...

Oh, good. Few things are more annoying that inauthentic horse parts.

I cry when they play the National Anthem.

Just between us, I do too, or at least, I get misty. I wonder what that's all about.

Just like the God Father movie? ;-)

It is a real chin trembler. Hard to categorize except that it is kind of a Hollywood throwback. I do not like Speilberg’s politics, but he knows how to punch all the right buttons of a movie audience - including its conservative contingent.(Saving Private Ryan etc.) The uniforms, war machines (tanks and machine guns), WWI tactics, units etc. all on accurate display. Also shows how WWI evolved from the 19th century notion of warfare to total war. Movie version of Armistice seems to have come too soon after the Somme which is the pivotal battle in the movie (may have been second Somme). I would give it a A- to B+ and its really not possible to hate this movie.

I felt that there was something lacking. It needed something. Star power? The first hour was bad, but it got better in the second hour. The story could have been better.

Out of the two recent Spielberg films, I highly recommend The Adventures of Tin Tin over this one.

“War Horse” is on vacation in Hawaii with her communist husband.

It is based on a kid’s book, so the story is somewhat simplistic. However, my wife (53) got into it enough that she shouted “Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!” at one point - and no one in the theater seemed to notice.

Good film. Not great, but a good film.

I think we are so accustomed to gory, wall-to-wall action,
characters with all kinds of angst and just flat out weird movies. When a movie that is simplistic and in the old style, it’s kind of jarring in it’s “quietness” so to speak. I actually liked the first hour, being a horse person. It showed the development and bonding of the two main characters. It was a tribute to the grit of the thoroughbred horse, so often considered just a flighty race horse.
