The time was that yahoo answered most basic searches sort of well. And then along came google, and for a while they looked like the gold standard. But lately the SEO games and massive quantity of stuff online has made simple queries painful. Anyone have a better set of search engines for the DIY or how to crowd?
I use dogpile too..
I never ever use Google, as they record every search that you make.
A privacy expert, Katherine Albrecht, recommends StartPage.
Another new one is Yandex, which went public (YNDX) last year if you don't mind Kommittee knowing what you seek.
I also use Bing ,but sometimes Microsoft will take it over with some kind of weird ad etc page ,it goes back to Bing page pretty quick
“Startpage.com. They do not record your activity, and Ive heard of no leftist bent about them.
Of course, theyre powered by Google, which I think most search engines are.”

If you want to search via Google,
StartPage will take you into Google through the back door.
Google will see only the IP of StartPage, and not yours.
A while back I heard about a new engine started up by a conservative group, but I have now recollection of name. I guess I might have tried them with no success.
I generally am correct about most things so just call me.
good thread. I have been wanting this info as well.
Another satisfied scroogle user here.

First- check out this page on Refdesk-

I just found the list of tutorials. There is also a listing of search engines there. I prefer Ixquick Metasearch.
You might want to check out this description of a listing of the top 100 alternative websites.

I use GoodSearch.com
It has never failed me.
The great thing about it is that when you first log on to do a search, they ask you for your favorite charity. They will donate a few pennies to this charity every time you use them.
Of course, my “charity” is Second Amendment Sisters. Our organization has gotten one check from them so far—but it was for more than $100.
I LOVE yubnub.org...and I just discovered https://ixquick.com/ .
There are already a number of good suggestions on this thread and I thought the PING list would both be able to use what is already here and contribute. Enjoy!
