A proposal in Virginia to charge shoppers a 20-cent per bag fee on all plastic bags used by grocery shoppers to carry purchased goods has sparked intense debate, WTOP reported. The fee would not apply to durable, reusable bags, or bags used for ice cream, meat, fish or poultry.

Sponsors of the measure say it is not meant to raise money, but to cut down on litter and pollution. They expect it will likely be cut down to 5 cents once a review begins in committee, according to WTOP.

So this means Bela Pelosi will be charged 20 cents everytime she goes to Virginia. I’m for it. :)

They already do this in Montgomery County where I work. I now go out of my way to shop at places that do not have this stupid law outside of the county. This is tyranny.

To be consistent, they should also place a $0.20 tax on each plastic bag used by newspapers to protect papers against rain.

I think Aldi does it right. The bags are heavy duty and very reusable.

How about a $.05 deposit on returnable plastic water bottles instead? It works for returnable bottles and cans and people actually make a living picking them up........

Always laughed as I saw poly lined diapers and plastic bags take hold.

It won’t be long before they are taxing us for using garbage bags.

I can picture this now,.... The bagger bags up your food putting 2 items in 1 bag and 3 in another and so on, the cashier is done ringing up the items but can not give you a total so you can pay while the bagger finishes, then all the bags are in your cart and the bagger says “that’s 14 bags” the cashier adds 14 x .20 cents to the bill and then the customer say, “No that is to many bags re-bag it, plus 3 bags are with ice cream and meat so you are over charging”, then a total amount is arrived at (after the bagger re-bags)and then you pay your bill, mean while the line is getting longer for people to check out and the customers are getting frustrated,...Hey looks like Virginia has come up with a real good tax...NOT. by the way, I am a Virginian and I will demand the wasteful bagger not use so many bags so please if you are behind me in line I suggest you move to another one :)

I would rather support a law that punishes litterers with death or dismemberment. I believe that would immediately cut down on liter bugs.

Two parts of the problem:

First conservatives have not figured out how to say, "you want to tax everyone because 1% can't put a plastic bag in the recycle bin. How is that fariness??"

Second, the reason to be FOR a recycled plastic bag is that it is made into FLEECE fabric and that keeps us warm, under fleece blankets or wearing fleece sweaters on a cool day. What is wrong with a plastic bag that becomes clothing? - now tell the 99% to recycle the bag.

We let the LEFT shape every darn story as their version of good of the planet.

I started saving plastic bags years ago when they first started talking about this. They’re easy to save, and don’t take up much room—I smooth and fold the bags as I bring them into the house, and then I can get a whole bunch of bags into one bag.

The pennies they will charge for each bag doesn’t bother me so much as it’s just another way for the gummit to pick our pockets, and I try to avoid letting them do that as much as possible.

This started in DC for groceries. That is bad enough, just another example of creeping "let's form a committee to tell everyone else how to live their lives"-ism. Then it spread next to the people's Republic of Montgomery County, whose lead town is Bethesda, which is the sister city of Berkeley CA, except that you have to add the self-hatred generated by the inadequacy complex that arises from being incomptetent at living with the occasional snow-storm. Mongomery County being in no way inferior to DC in its socialist (crony capitalist actually since these are internationalists who enrich themselves at the trough of the world bank especially among others) upped this to a 5c fee on all bags for any purchase whatsover.

Now it has spread to VA.

Shopping? What a bourgeois idea. It is for the unwashed, the peasants out there. Oh, me? He he, well if I spend my next Fannie Mae bonus at Saks Jandal that is ok. That's different.

This monster of a DC "metropolitan" area is eating everyone's lunch. Even NY is better. At least they have ideas in NY and the paraciticsm of NY City in large measure is enabled by the denizens of DC who don't mind the bailouts just so long as they get their 10% cut for processing fees. "Carrying charges, my boy" if one remembers Sydney Greenstreet's famous line.

It's not about litter or saving trees, etc. It's about finding more ways to take our money, i.e. our freedom, away from us.
Global Warming is the granddaddy of them all.
