Hollister hires Johnny to bodyguard Greater Southwest Insurance Company's client Henry Kirkham from Tuttle, Arizona, who has been receiving death threats, but he arrives too late and can only help find the murderer. Police Chief Alfred Appleby's primary suspect is Walter Pinkley, the beneficiary of Kirkham's policy - as well as a Greater Southwest policy holder himself. If Kirkham died of suicide there is no $70,000 payout. However, if Pinkley murdered him there will be a $70,000 payout to someone plus there would be a payout on Pinkley's policy if he is executed by the state. Kirkham and Pinkley resided at the Yucca Flower Rest Home. Pinkley was a composer of musical concertos which Kirkham admired. They ate at the "Captain's Table" with Sarah Sanderson (in her late 70s), Captain Eustace Langhorne Avery Howard (an arrogant, conceited blowhard), and David Hessier (who's mind is failing). Just before being murdered Kirkham was composing a letter. He was an old acting ham and wrote with a flourish. He was describing the person threatening him as having a terrible concetto when he was murdered. Appleby took concetto to mean concerto. However, concetto means conceited in Italian, and Kirkham was referring to Captain Howard, whom Kirkham had recently replaced with Pinkley as the beneficiary of his policy. At Skinner's Saloon a sign proclaims the appearance of the world famous English actress, Miss Ulelia Robinson. She gives a reading from Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. She was in her late 30s, not a good actress and not beautiful, but she had presence, and every man in the saloon was in love with her an hour later. Kendall, as a newspaper correspondent, gets back stage to meet Miss Robinson and her business manager, Mr. James Grimes. The latter tries to shoo Kendall away, and keep him from being alone with her. However, Miss Robinson goes to dinner at the hotel with Kendall. She says she met Grimes in Boston. Kendall asks why she is afraid of him. She is surprised that it shows. She admits that she is a liar, and not English. She admits that she was married once, after having first denied it. She says the marriage didn't end well. Gunshots ring out. Miss Robinson is wounded. With blood flowing from her mouth, she goes unconscious. Skinner shows up and says that the boys at the saloon are in a lynching mood if they can find the culprit. Grimes has not been seen. Miss Robinson regains consciousness. Doctor Todd shows up. He says she has lost lots of blood. The local men have taken up a collection to pay Doctor Todd. Fifty or sixty men hang around in hopes that Miss Robinson would survive. Skinner says he heard Grimes arguing with her in the afternoon. Grimes gets the drop on Kendall with a gun. He tells Kendall that Miss Robinson is his wife now. She left Boston with him and her first husband committed suicide. She revives enough to tell Grimes he is not a man, then she dies. Oh! I saw that movie still on Drudge recently, but did not read the article. I read the NOLA review you linked and watched the preview on You Tube. Just the preview alone made me get teary-eyed (I’m SUCH a wuss!).

We MUST see that picture! We go to the movie theater, maybe once or twice a year, if that, but this would be great to see on the Big Screen. Thank you, SteelYourFaith!

Right! But, if you notice, even Father Knows Best makes the Mom and kids seem "smarter" than Dad. The upside-down stuff was starting even back then. "Let's make Father think it's HIS idea." Yes, that's the ticket. The attack on the family and fathers has been going on for a lot of the 20th Century.
