Sixty-five years ago, on January 25, 1945, the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, added fluoride to its municipal water system and community water fluoridation began. Since that day, this simple, safe, and inexpensive public health intervention has contributed to a remarkable decline in tooth decay in the United States, with each generation enjoying better oral health than the previous generation.
After fluorides oral health benefits were discovered in the 1930s, the next step was to achieve optimal levels in community water supplies. Four communities had agreed to undertake community studies, but Grand Rapids was the first to begin implementation. After fluoride was added to its water supply, Grand Rapids was compared to control communities with no added fluoride, and a detailed assessment of the relationship between fluoridation and tooth decay was performed. The National Academy of Sciences National Research Council (NRC) reviewed the results and found a dramatic decline in tooth decay in the Grand Rapids children. On November 29, 1951, the NRC declared water fluoridation safe, effective, and beneficial.

Ever wonder why so many urbanites are idiots?
The Nanny State will decide what to put in our water. Are we not grateful?
I’ve never had city water and I have better teeth than most people my age.
Yes I brush with fluoridated toothpaste but that’s a far cry from ingesting it on a regular basis.
If you want really clean teeth and gums 3% hydrogen peroxide works really, really well.
It's a plot.
These fluoride nuts - they do not avoid women - but they do deny them their essence. ;)
Maybe a contributor to Alzheimer and dementia.
The previous optimal level for fluoride was a range of 0.7 to 1.2.
Most doctors I’ve come acrosss, would refuse to prescribe for a patient s/he has never met, whose medical history s/he does not know, a substance which is intended to create bodily change; with the advice, take as much as you like but you will take it for the rest of your life, because *some* children have tooth decay. Oi!
We need to eliminate the FDA. Among others. Flouride is poison.
**In 1993, the National Research Council’s Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology issued a statement specifying the amount of fluoride and the duration of exposure that would be conducive to skeletal fluorosis to be 10 to 20 mg/day for 10 to 20 years. Applying these figures to a lifetime of 55 to 96 years reveals that just 1.0 mg/day (the amount of fluoride in one liter of water) for each 55 pounds of body weight could conceivably be a crippling dosage.**
Recent evidence suggests that mixing powdaered or liquid infant formula concentrate with fluoridated water on a regular basis may increase the chance of a child developing the faint, white markings of very mild or mild enamel fluorosis.
You can use fluoridated water for preparing infant formula. However, if your child is exclusively consuming infant formula reconstituted with fluoridated water, there may be an increased chance for mild dental fluorosis. To lessen this chance, parents can use low-fluoride bottled water
