OTTAWA — Prop comedy. Such a simple concept, so rarely incorporated in the NHL's Breakaway Challenge Skills Competition. Alex Ovechkin won the 2009 event in Montreal by donning sunglasses and a goofy hat. In 2012, two NHL superstars finally gave props to the skills competition again.

I'm pretty sure the goalie was in on the shtick.

I’m not so sure that the goalie was in on it. Still, is that “hand pass” legal? I’m pretty sure that you cannot advance the puck with your hand like that.

Well, seeing that the goalie didn’t even try to make the save, you could say he was in on it.

The "hand pass" did not go to another attacking player (therefore, no "pass") nor was the puck directed into the net until it was re-directed by his stick.
Not sure about the rules for this competition, but imo this would be legal for game play.

Different topic but Larry Brooks of the New York Post, an unabashed liberal, wrote the following in today's newspaper. It is astounding how these libs refuse to acknowledge what was said and done regarding President Bush. He uses Sarah Palin, a VP candidate, in comparison to the current POTUS.

* Tim Thomas, who has the right to do whatever he pleases, was invited to the White House as a member of the team that won the Stanley Cup and only because he was a member of the team that won the Stanley Cup, so it only confuses the issue when he attempts to lecture about his snub being of a “personal” nature. One wonders how those hailing Thomas for his politically opportunistic move would have responded if a Rangers player had refused to join the team on the ice in Philadelphia when vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin dropped the ceremonial first puck prior to the 2008-09 season opener before posting a manifesto contesting the then-Alaska governor’s views.

The Bruins organization, meanwhile, handled Thomas’ absence perfectly. It would have been a practical impossibility to “force” the recalcitrant goaltender to attend the ceremony and no doubt would have provoked a confrontation with the NHLPA had the club suspended Thomas for failing to join the team function. Thomas made his point. The Bruins made theirs by responding to a difficult situation with dignity befitting a champion.

I love hockey but I have to say that of the 3 major sports that have all star games the weekend festivities for the hockey all star game are more uninteresting than any other. I’m looking forward tothe game but the challenge competition just does not compare to a HR contest (who can forget Josh HAmilton’s exploits a few yrs ago) or the NBA’s three point contest.

There are no rules, that's why it's called "trick shot" competition.......Did you see the shot by one of the other guys where the puck split up into 4 or 5 pieces?

I strongly disagree......I think the NHL does it right. It shows just how skilled these guys really are.....it almost is like an Olympics competition.....it was great to see just how fast Chara could shoot the puck.

It was done by the same guy that went down on his stomach, directed the puck with his hand towards his right, then deflected it with his stick.

My problem was that he was sliding along the ice, holding the puck under his glove. You cannot advance the puck with your hand, which he clearly and deliberately does. The Harlem Globe Trotters were known to bend a few rules, now and then, here and there.
