UAH Global Temperature Update for January 2012: -0.09 deg. C

By Dr. Roy Spencer

PERSONAL NOTE: I’ve been unavailable for a while…my oldest daughter was in a bad car accident, will be OK eventually, but won’t walk for about 3 months. So, I might not be answering queries.

The global average lower tropospheric temperature anomaly for January, 2012 took a precipitous plunge, not totally unexpected for a La Nina January (click on the image for the full-size version):

The 3rd order polynomial fit to the data (courtesy of Excel) is for entertainment purposes only, and should not be construed as having any predictive value whatsoever.

Here are the monthly stats:

YR MON GLOBAL NH SH TROPICS
2011 1 -0.010 -0.055 +0.036 -0.372
2011 2 -0.020 -0.042 +0.002 -0.348
2011 3 -0.101 -0.073 -0.128 -0.342
2011 4 +0.117 +0.195 +0.039 -0.229
2011 5 +0.133 +0.145 +0.121 -0.043
2011 6 +0.315 +0.379 +0.250 +0.233
2011 7 +0.374 +0.344 +0.404 +0.204

2011 8 +0.327 +0.321 +0.332 +0.155
2011 9 +0.289 +0.304 +0.274 +0.178
2011 10 +0.116 +0.169 +0.062 -0.054
2011 11 +0.123 +0.075 +0.170 +0.024
2011 12 +0.126 +0.197 +0.055 +0.041
2012 01 -0.093 -0.059 -0.127 -0.138

Progress continues on Version 6 of our global temperature dataset. You can anticipate a little cooler anomalies than recently reported, maybe by a few hundredths of a degree, due to a small warming drift we have identified in one of the satellites carrying the AMSU instruments.

Ruh Roh, we’re screwed (well maybe just those who live in AK above the panhandle).

It’s colder than 1980 (wasn’t that when Hansen sounded the CAGW alarm?).

Still, there is a small warming trend - though no signs of the runaway warming Hansen has been talking about.

And a warming trend is to be expected since we left the little ice age.

Most people agree that CO2 has a small warming effect, but no where near what the IPPC things. They rely on these positive feedback loops that are questionable to say the least.

If the earth’s climate is as unstable as they think we would either have stayed as Iceball Earth or gone the nightmare Venus route a long time ago already.

Besides, a little globalwarming is good for the planet and us living here.

I reserve my god-given right to cherry-pick salacious data with the best of them. Trend-schmend.

It’s odd though how the 98 en ninjo seems to have caused a step change... by some -0.2 degrees then a similar patter just a little higher.

Meant plus 0.2 and “pattern”

Anyhow, cherry picking is good. I love cherries :)

Well, there is someone out there at WUWT who claims that the better math model is to use step changes (associated with climatic ocean events).

If you think things are getting uniformly warmer, you should talk to the folks of Circle Hot Springs, AK.

We are talking globally here.

It almost seeems like the global temp is corrolated inversly with the location where I live.

Now the global temp according to the same satellite has risen sharply, whilst here we have gotten the first real cold of this winter.

BTW the link is here:

Channel 5.

Anyhow, an increase of 0.2 degrees it way way to small to be noticable in the noice anyhow.

In other words for practical purposes it is the same as in 1980. Pretty much.

OK, so what’s with the reversal of the seasonality of the temps with increasing altitude?

Don’t believe anything coming from the liberal left. These frauds make their living propagandizing scams like global warming, global cooling, acid rain, ozone hole to grow government and keep them working.

I checked out some of the plots for temps at various altitudes on an year long basis :

Right now the globe is colder then normal. Only the central US and Eastern US has been warmer then normal recently. And some speculate that was simply due to Jet Stream pattern changes caused by the stronger solar activity we have had recently. That activity is on a downward trend right now and solar activity is currently just a little above average. It has been on a downward trend the past few days.

OK, so what’s with the reversal of the seasonality of the temps with increasing altitude?

Global warming theory states that as the troposhere (surface to 10k) warms, because of atmospheric energy budget, this causes the stratoshere (10k to 50k) to cool.

I suppose this would apply seasonal as well, so summertime troposphere warms, stratosphere cools.
